Check out the Preview of my good friend Chris Krause's new book, Athletes Wanted. I wrote the forward because I really believe in his passion for helping athletes. Every athlete with dreams of playing college sports needs to read this book.

A Big Recruiting Weekend
-UCLA is quietly assembling another great class under Rick Neuhesial. Its almost a foregone conclusion since Rick is such a great recruiter and the LA area is one of the most fertile recruiting areas in the country. Last year they took a few players from USC and this year they will take a few more. I think can eventually get to 50/50. They have such a beautiful campus, great academics, close to the beach, now all they have to do is win.
-Big Recruiting Weekend at Notre Dame for Charlie Weis. The biggest in 10 years. Seantrell Henderson will in attendance. Electricity will be in the air, the problem again is winning, The really need to keep the game close. If they win I think the players will start to crawl in the boat. will start crawling into the boat
Jr Ferguson has narrowed his list to five school, it is expected to be LSU, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Miami. I just talked to a course very close to the family and he will make his decision based on academics and the ability to play early. Whoever does the best job convincing him of those two factors will be the winner.

Florida Recruiting Update
With all of the news coming out of the state of Florida recently I thought I would weigh in on several of the topics that are circling the rumor mill.
-The Bobby Bowden situation at Florida State shouldn't affect recruiting too much, because Jimbo fisher, the coach in waiting, is already the front man in recruiting. He is getting in who he wants. He is totally in control of the recruiting situation. However, if they keep losing some of the kids wont want to play Bobby or Jimbo. The school is bringing on a lot of the negative press themselves. They miss out on a couple of superstars if they keep up this infighting.
-Despite South Florida's big win over FSU, I still don't see it changing the recruiting situation much. They aren't going to beat Florida, FSU, or Miami head on.
-Miami had 2011 standout LB Denzel Perryman for the Oklahoma game. So far I have been really impressed with his athletic ability. Can really fly to the ball.

Northwestern Recruiting, 2010 QB's, and Penn State
Today's News:
-Northwestern class is looking extremely solid this year. Tghe key would be is that Florida and the missiisppi is the place everyone is going to. Because of Florida's talent they have become just as important as Chicago. Its important because of their academics that they recruit nationally. But, the entire Big Ten is paying more attention to Florida as well.
-So far the 2010 class has yet to have a clear cut number one quarterback, however a few have stood out in my mind. Phillip Simms from Virginia. Jake Heaps. Tommy Rees is tearing things up in Chicago right now.
-Penn State has a top 5 class right now. I expect them to hold on tho their commitments even if they lose a few games, because their top recruits are all from their primary recruiting area.

Examining the First Player's Named to the All-American Bowl
Ronald Powell - One of the most heavily recruited players in the country. Has tremendous confidence bordering on cockiness. But, its that confidence that will allow him to play early in his career. I suspect USC will end up with him.
Lache Seastrunk - Tremendous speed, Tremendous Vision. Small, but very explosive. The top back in the country. I have a feeling he will end up at LSU due to his ties to the area.
Shakim Phillips - Just committed to BC. A coup for the coaching staff. They haven't had such a big-time receiver in quite some time. I expect him to play early.
Random Notes:
Kyle Prater, previously committed to USC, will visit Illinois and Oklahoma. I think Ron Zook ends up beating out Pete Carroll.
C.J. Federwicz is my top tight end in the nation. He is now planning on visiting Iowa and Wisconsin.

All-American Bowl Selections
The first three players have been selected for this year All-American Bowl. Ronald Powell, a tight end and defensive lineman from Moreno Valley High School in California; Shakim Phillips, a wide receiver from DePaul Catholic High School in Wayne, N.J., who has verbally committed to Boston College; and Lache Seastrunk from temple, Tex.
All three look like fantastic talents and have bright futures.

Top California Football Prospects
California
Quarterbacks
••••+ Nick Montana 6-2, 193, 4.58 Westlake Village Oaks Christian
No quarterback this year has come farther in such a short period of time than Nick Montana. I mean that literally as a developing quarterback and travelling from the San Francisco are to Las Angeles to play his junior year.
On Film–#5 is as accurate as any QB in the country. He shows good poise, decision making ability, footwork, and his pass set-ups are smooth and quick. He is always ready to throw and get the ball out quick. He can zip the ball into receivers' hands, and appears to have great vision and can spot open receivers from across the entire field. He has gone from a suspect to one of the most heavily recruited QB prospects in the country.
Stats–He threw for 2,404 yds and 33 TDs and was picked off just 7 times. If he improves this year like he did last year we could be talking about the country's #1 QB prospect.
Grades–His GPA is 3.2.
Favorite Schools–He is the son of NFL hall of famer Joe Montana. Committed to WASHINGTON.
••••+ Pete Thomas 6-5, 215, 4.9 El Cajon Valhalla
I love this young man's potential and production.
On Film–He shows excellent footwork, can control the deep out with authority, and he's exceptionally accurate and poised. He has shown, time and time again, that he can make all the throws. He shows some scrambling ability but is better suited for a pro-style offense. Very comfortable in the pocket, he can sense the heat and knows when to hold the ball and when to get rid of it. As polished as they come, he's adept at play action faking and has proven to be a leader on the field.
Stats–He threw for 3,169 yds and 28 TDs and was picked off 5 times. He completed 68% of his passes. He also ran for 150 yds and 6 TDs, and he caught a pass for 19 yds and a TD.
Grades–His GPA is a perfect 4.0. Benches 265 and has a 31" VJ.
Favorite Schools–Committed to ASU.
••••+ Jesse Scroggins 6-3, 193, 4.8 Lakewood
He has risen up the blue chip quarterback ratings almost as far as Nick Montana.
On Film–#15 shows poise under pressure, the ability to read defenses, and he's adept at play action. He shows big-time arm strength, athleticism, and smarts. He shows pretty good throwing mechanics and is very good in short to medium range passes. Very comfortable in the pocket, he's not afraid to take a hit but he can also run himself out of trouble. He shot up a lot of people's lists during the spring evaluations and is now considered to be one of the most recruitable QB's in the country.
Grades–His GPA is over a 2.5 and he scored a 1570 on the SAT. Benches 255.
Favorite Schools–FL, UCLA, USC, NE, TN, LSU, and NC.
•••• Ryan Kasdorf 6-1, 205, 4.7 Sherman Oaks Notre Dame
Ryan was one of the QB's that really impressed me down in San Antonio.
On Film–He is very accurate, good at throwing deep passes, and is also an expert at improvising when a play breaks down. He shows a lot of poise and leadership skills, and knows when to hold the ball and when to get rid of it. He sets up quickly and can hit receivers on the run. Not super tall but he can certainly get the job done in either a pro-style or spread offense. One of the more athletic QB's in the state.
Stats–He threw for 3,291 yds and 36 TDs and was picked off 8 times last season completing 69% of his passes. He also ran for 630 yds and 6 TDs playing in one of the country's more competitive leagues.
Grades–His GPA is 3.5.
Favorite Schools–CAL, LOUISVILLE, UNLV, WA, NOTRE DAME, STANFORD, AL, and FSU.
•••+ Nick Hirschman 6-3, 220 Los Gatos
As tough as they come when you are talking about a leader and a QB who will stay in the pocket until the last second.
On Film–#5 is a big, thick kid who shows the ability to see the whole field. As a pocket passer, he does a good job of avoiding the rush and making something out of nothing. Very competitive, he has outstanding work habits. He stays very cool under pressure, which has allowed him to pull out a few games in the last drive.
Stats–He completed 114 of 192 passes for 2,172 yds and 15 TDs, and was picked off 5 times.
Grades–His GPA is 3.7. Benches 290 and has a 29" VJ.
Favorite Schools–Committed to COLORADO.
•••+ Bryan Bennett 6-3½, 185, 4.67 Encino Crespi
Still another standout pro-style passer with big-time arm strength and athletic ability.
On Film–Bryan impresses you with his poise in the pocket and ability to run himself out of trouble. He shows a quick setup and can hit receivers on the run. He shows pretty good touch on his deep balls, strides into his throws and does not force the ball. As a sophomore he led Crespi to a CIF championship.
Stats–He threw for 1,700 yds and 10 TDs and also ran for 3 others.
Other Sports–He's been timed in an 11.3 100, a 23 flat 200 meters, long jumped 20½', and triple jumped 45' 7" in track.
Grades–His GPA is over a 2.5. Benches 235 and has a 36" VJ.
Favorite Schools–Committed to OREGON.
•••+ Tyler Shreve 6-4, 215, 4.7 Redlands East Valley
A big, thick QB who on film shows outstanding arm strength and surprising mobility.
On Film–In person Tyler looks more like a linebacker than he does a quarterback but on film he certainly can get the job done. He sets up quickly for the pass, is very cool under pressure, and he shows good throwing mechanics and is very good in short to medium range passes. Comfortable in the pocket, he does show the ability to move in the pocket. Though not a runner, he's a very good athlete with moves. He shows good vision on the field and does a good job of leading receivers.
Stats–Earned All-Conference and All-Area honors for the second year in a row at QB.
Other Sports–He has batted .400 in baseball and as a pitcher he throws a 93 MPH fastball.
Grades–His GPA is 3.0. Benches 245.
Favorite Schools–AZ, GA, KS STATE, TN, UCLA, and CAL
••• Chase Rettig 6-3, 205, 4.7 San Clemente
One of the more athletic QB prospects who fits into a pro-style or spread offense.
On Film–He shows good feet, poise, confidence, release, and timing. He's an expert at throwing the ball on the run and he also makes very good throwing decisions. Scouts are enamored with his arm strength and overall athletic ability.
Stats–He threw for 2,500 yds and 25 TDs completing 53% of his passes and was picked off 11 times.
Grades–His GPA is 3.5.
Favorite Schools–Committed to BOSTON COLLEGE.
••• Sean Mannion 6-5, 200, 5.0 Pleasanton Foothill
Strictly a pro-style QB.
On Film–#14 shows excellent arm strength, he makes good decisions, and shows poise and courage in the pocket. Quicker than he is fast, he has good awareness and is not bad when throwing the ball while on the run.
Stats–He completed 170 of 308 passes for 2,608 yds and 23 TDs and was picked off 8 times. He also ran for 3 scores. He threw for 400 yds and 4 TDs against Freedom.
Grades–His GPA is over a 3.5 and he scored a 1622 on the SAT. Benches 265.
Favorite Schools–Committed to OREGON STATE.
••• Brett Nottingham 6-4, 210, 4.7 Danville Monte Vista
Still another big, strong QB with major-league arm strength.
On Film–Brett is also exceptionally accurate, consistent, smart, capable of reading defenses, and he's as competitive as they come. For proof just watch the Pittsburg game in which he threw for 380 yds and 3 TDs against a very strong defense. He's the type of QB who makes the other offensive players around him look better. He shows pretty nifty footwork in the pocket and he's at his best when throwing short to intermediate routes. He his receivers on the numbers.
Stats–He threw for 3,500 yds, 39 TDs, and had 11 picks on his way to earning 2nd Team All-East Bay honors.
Other Sports–He is a starting outfielder in baseball.
Grades–His GPA is 3.8. Benches 255.
Favorite Schools–His father played football at CAL. Committed to UCLA.
••• Tyler Bray 6-6, 195, 5.1 Kingsburg
He may not be the fastest QB around, as a matter of fact maybe one of the slowest, but believe me this young man can play the game.
On Film–You've got to be impressed with his arm strength, ability to throw the deep out with authority, poise, and toughness in the pocket. He may not be able to move very well but he can maneuver around the pocket to buy time until his receivers become open. Never a threat to run, he's better suited to play in a pro-style offense.
Stats–Threw for 1,726 yds and 18 TDs and was picked off 6 times. He completed 57% of his passes.
Favorite Schools–USC, FRESNO STATE, SAN DIEGO ST, NORTHWESTERN, and LOUISVILLE.
••• Dylan Swartz 6-3, 220, 4.9 Modesto Central Catholic
This state sure had a lot of big QB prospects.
On Film–#16 shows the arm strength, ability to read coverages, and the work ethic to make it at the Division I level. Very cool under pressure, he plays big in big games. An outstanding all around athlete. Although best suited for the pro-style offense, he can run himself out of trouble when forced out of the pocket. A very confident and smart player.
Stats–Completed 143 of 232 passes for 2,057 yds and 22 TDs and was picked off 8 times. He also ran for 55 yds and 1 score.
Other Sports–In baseball he batted .450 as a catcher.
Grades–His GPA is 3.0.
Favorite Schools–Looking at AZ, WSU, WA, ASU, and other PAC-10 schools.
••• Andrew Lachelt 6-3, 185, 4.5 Ontario Christian
Area coaches tell me that Lachelt is a name to remember.
On Film–He shows very good athletic ability, the ability to make quick decisions, and he surprises you with his ability to throw the deep out with authority. He can also surprise you with his ability to run himself out of trouble and run for positive yards.
Stats–He played in only five games due to an ACL tear and still threw for 900 yds and 8 TDs, and rushed for 600 yds and 5 scores. Big things are expected of Andrew this year and he does have four and possibly five-star potential.
Other Sports–
Grades–His GPA is 3.0. Benches 195 and has a 33" VJ.
Favorite Schools–OR, KS STATE, BOISE STATE, SAN JOSE ST, UNLV, SAN DIEGO STATE, CO, and CO STATE.
••• Kerr Taubler 6-3, 208, 4.68 Fresno Bullard
I've got to admit I never knew much about Kerr until his teammate brought him to one of my interview sessions.
On Film–He's an athletic QB with a strong arm, and he can make plays with his arm, and his feet. He shows good vision, makes good decisions, and at times shows the ability to take over a game like he did in the Clovis West semi-final game in which he went 20 for 25 for 240 yds and 2 TDs.
Stats–He completed 109 of 201 passes for 1,880 yds and 14 TDs and was picked off 7 times. He also carried the ball 41 times for 228 yds and 4 TDs.
Other Sports–He's been timed in an 11.6 100 meters and a 52 flat 400 meters.
Grades–His GPA is a perfect 4.2. Benches 285.
Favorite Schools–STANFORD, UTAH, HARVARD, CAL, SAN DIEGO STATE, FRESNO STATE, and WA.
••• John Timu 6-1, 195, 4.55 Long Beach Jordan
I'm listing John as a QB. He's a three-star QB but possibly could wind up being a four-star WR if he switches to that position.
On Film–His film shows a very athletic QB and FS, a dangerous runner with a live arm, and he shows the ability to effectively throw the ball on the run. When I was out in L.A. a good number of people were talking about John as possibly a WR or FS because of his strong hands and running ability. If he is given a chance at QB, he needs to develop more consistency as a passer but can beat you with his legs.
Stats–He accounted for over 1,000 yds in total offense in '08.
Grades–His GPA is 3.0.
Favorite Schools–OR, WA, HI, WSU, CAL, and UCLA.
••• Travis Champion 6-2, 200, 4.9 Moreno Valley Rancho Verde
Here's a ball player I don't know a whole lot about but I do know that he has excellent athletic credentials and definitely has Division I skills at the QB position.
On Film–He throws a nice, catchable ball and is an expert in the short to intermediate routes. Very strong in the pocket, he does a good job of striding into his throws and makes good decisions.
Grades–His GPA is 3.6.
Future All-American
Trevor Gretzky 6-4, 180, 4.7 Westlake Village Oaks Christian
The son of hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, he's on the verge of making a major name for himself in a completely different sport.
On Film–He backed up Nick Montana last season but I was able to get some film on Trevor from his coach Bill Redell. He shows very good arm strength, great vision, and surprising speed. A very good all around athlete, he plays in one of the top offensive programs in the country. He is smart and an expert at reading defenses going through progressions and is one of the more accurate passers in southern California. Big things will be expected of him next season.
Other Sports–He batted .560 in baseball.
Grades–His GPA is over a 3.5.
Other Quarterbacks to Watch:

••••• Jordon James 5-10, 190, 4.35 Corona
The fastest rising back in the country. Jordon was a future All-American in our magazine last summer and he did nothing to dispel that title despite only playing half the season last year.
On Film–The Flash tore things up showing great speed, quickness, vision, and balance. You might say he was the most effective RB prospect in the state in '08. He is more than just a slasher showing deceptive strength, the ability to break tackles, he seems to see the holes before they open, and he's able to reach full speed in a flash. He can out run most defenders, even the ones who get an angle on him. He can also cut on a dime and possesses big-time explosiveness. If he stays healthy, look out. He has the ability to be an impact player as a true freshman.
Stats–In just four and a half games he carried the ball 130 times for 1,135 yds and 10 TDs averaging 8.7 yds per carry in a very competitive league. He also caught 5 passes for 88 yds and 1 score.
Other Sports–In track he's been timed in a 10.6 100, a 22 flat 200 meters, and long jumped 22'.
Favorite Schools–UCLA, USC, NOTRE DAME, AZ, FL, STANFORD, WA, and CAL.
••••• D.J. Morgan 5-10, 175, 4.4 Woodland Hills Taft
Not as strong as Jordon but just as fast and elusive.
On Film–#30 shows terrific vision and blazing speed. He's an excellent all around back who can run, catch, and block. Shows the ability to break tackles but he's more of a slasher with excellent moves. He can get outside quickly and turn the corner in the blink of an eye. Once he gets a half of a step on a defender, it's all over. A difference maker at the high school level and he's one of those backs who needs to be accounted for at all times.
Stats–He carried the ball 212 times for 1,841 yds and 26 TDs averaging 8.6 yds per carry. He also caught 32 passes for 582 yds and 7 scores.
Other Sports–He's been timed in a 10.6 100, a 21.8 200 meters, and long jumped 22' 9" in track. He can run the 300 high hurdles in 37.6.
Grades–His GPA is over a 2.0. Benches 260 and has a 36" VJ.
Favorite Schools–Committed to USC.
••••+ Dillon Baxter 5-11, 190, 4.4 San Diego Mission Bay
Normally it's my opinion that Florida and Texas lead the way with talent year in and year out but this year California is going to give them quite a battle. When you talk about elite players there is no state with as many as the Golden State and Mr. Baxter is one of them.
On Film–DBAXX appears to be an all around back who can run and catch. He shows excellent field vision, burst, balance, and moves. He runs low to the ground and is tough to spot. He seems to have that vision and burst that the college scouts are looking for. His initial burst is amazing, he explodes through holes, and can quickly bounce outside for additional yardage. In my opinion he is the most versatile of all the backs, in fact, he played QB, WR, and RB in '08. He prefers to play TB in college.
Stats–He completed 100 of 185 passes for 1,100 yds and 20 TDs, and he also ran for 850 yds and 10 TDs on 100 carries. He also caught 10 passes for 250 yds and 5 TDs.
Grades–His GPA is 3.3. Benches 275.
Favorite Schools–Committed to USC.
••••+ Brennan Clay 6-0, 190, 4.46 San Diego Scripps Ranch
I've never seen so many high quality backs in one area like I have in southern California this year.
On Film–Brennan can certainly be called high quality. He's a leader both on and off the field and is a selfless player who will do whatever it takes to win the ball game. His film shows him playing TB, WR, slot, CB, MLB and FS. The first game on his highlight film has him rushing for 190 yds, catching 8 passes for 136 yds, and totaling 178 yds in returns for 3 TDs. Explosive and instinctive, he can create in the open field and he's a joy to watch. He's better suited to play slot-back in college. Once he gets out in space, that's when the fun begins. He's an electrifying runner with a big-time future.
Stats–Carried the ball 170 times for 1,488 yds and 20 TDs averaging 9 yds per carry. He also caught 70 passes for 1,055 yds and 6 TDs. He totaled 20 solo tackle, 6 tackles for losses, and 3 caused fumbles on defense and batted down a team high 13 passes.
Other Sports–He's been timed in a 10.9 100. a 22.7 200 meters, and he long jumped 21' 11" in track.
Grades–His GPA is 3.8. Benches 305 and has a 33" VJ.
Favorite Schools–Committed to OKLAHOMA.
•••• Sam (Ricky) Seale 5-9½, 180, 4.4 Escondido
Still another all-star back from southern California.
On Film–#30 is known for his great second effort, burst, and ability to break tackles. Although he only weighs 180 pounds, he's a load for defenders to bring down. He runs with strength and attitude. His vision is second to none, he shows the speed to turn the corner, and the power to successfully run between the tackles. He also has the kind of breakaway speed to become an impact player at the next level. You've got to love his attitude and determination. His father, Sam Seale, played for the Oakland Raiders and the San Diego Chargers, and he is now scouting for the Green Bay Packers.
Stats–This workhorse carried the ball 330 times in '08 totaling 2,695 yds and 32 TDs on his way to earning All-San Diego area honors.
Other Sports–He's been timed in a 10.8 100 meters in track.
Grades–His GPA is 3.4.
Favorite Schools–STANFORD, UCLA, CAL, ASU, WA, SAN DIEGO ST, and USC.
•••+ Adonis Smith 5-11, 185, 4.48 San Mateo Serra
Right now he ranks as the top back in northern California.
On Film–Adonis shows the balance, speed, vision, and cutting ability you like to see in a 185 pounder. He's got very workable speed, not a blazer but he's fast and an effective runner both inside and out. Plays big in big games and he was the dominating player in the De La Salle game last November. All Day, as he is known to some, was also the area's top punt and kickoff returner.
Stats–Carried the ball 90 times for 644 yds and 8 TDs averaging 7.2 yds per carry and he caught 12 passes for 106 yds and 1 score. He also averaged 21 yds on punts, punt returns and 22 yds on kickoff returns.
Other Sports–He's been timed in an 11.2 100 meters and a 23.4 200 meters in track.
Grades–His GPA is 2.8. Benches 275 and has a 37" VJ.
Favorite Schools–WSU, UTAH, CAL, UCLA, AZ, ASU, NORTHWESTERN, SAN DIEGO ST, and NE.
•••+ Anthony Brown 5-11, 180, 4.5 Fontana Kaiser
He was little known until scouts came to his high school to checkout teammate Josh Shirley, and a good number of them fell in love with Mr. Brown.
On Film–He's a quick darting type back with good vision, surprising strength, shows good open field moves, is very strong in the legs, and does a good job of finishing off his runs.
Stats–Averaged over 7 yds per carry in his prep career.
Favorite Schools–USC, CO, IOWA STATE, NE, UCLA, OR, and TN.
•••+ James McConico 6-0, 190, 4.5 Compton High
He had a very good junior season. His coach says he's a threat to score everything he touches the ball.
On Film–James brings pretty good size, speed, vision, and balance to the recruiting table. He shows the ability to break tackles and once he does, he can create in the open field. He's a good athlete who can catch the ball and he hits the hole quickly and with authority.
Stats–Earned All-Conference honors for his play at TB.
Favorite Schools–AZ, NE, CO, ASU, OR, and WA.
••• David Dash 5-9, 175, 4.6 Fontana Miller
He's another back really coming into his own. I must admit I missed David when I went through California in March but his name was brought to my attention by one of my local scouts.
On Film–He's a quick darting back with good but not brilliant speed. He has not been blessed with great size but runs with very good strength. He shows good vision and cutting ability.
Grades–His GPA is 2.5. Has a 30" VJ.
Favorite Schools–IOWA STATE, CAL, USC, WA, NM STATE, and ASU.
••• Derron Smith 5-11, 170, 4.6 Banning
Not the biggest, fastest, or the strongest back around but this guy plays the game exceptionally well.
On Film–He shows excellent quickness, burst to the hole, surprising strength, and real good vision and balance. He might be better suited for the slot-back position or CB where he shows explosive moves, can turn his hips, and excels when the ball is in the air. He did excel against Kaiser in the playoffs last fall.
Stats–He completed 70 of 141 passes for 1,214 yds and 9 TDs and carried the ball 140 times for 1,094 yds and 8 TDs playing both QB and RB. He totaled 87 tackles, 3 picks, and 2 caused fumbles at FS/CB.
Other Sports–Averages 17 pts and 6 rebounds a game as a shooting guard in basketball.
Grades–His GPA is 3.1 and he scored a 1550 on the SAT. Benches 225 and has a 35" VJ.
Favorite Schools–UNLV, SAN DIEGO ST, UCLA, CAL, OR, OR STATE, and WA.
••• Tim Deir 5-9, 185, 4.5 Escondido
Running mate of Ricky Seales, Tim plays FB in high school but could wind up playing TB in college.
On Film–He runs with great leg strength, has very good speed, vision, and balance. He came on strong the second half of last season. He is particularly good running between the tackles. He keeps his legs moving at all times and has proven to be a very difficult tackle.
Stats–He rushed for over 1,300 yds and 15 TDs in '08.
••• Exavier Edwards 5-8, 192, 4.5 Mission Viejo
Head Coach Bob Johnson really recommended this young man highly and called him a definite Division I prospect at the RB position.
On Film–He proves to be a good all around back who can run and catch. He might be better suited to play the slot showing good vision and balance, and can really create out in space. He had a pretty good season in '08 and big things are expected of him in on both sides of the ball this year.
Grades–His GPA is 3.0.
Favorite Schools–FL, CLEM, WA, UCLA, LSU, FSU, OR, OR STATE, and GA.
••• Devon Blackledge 5-9, 175, 4.35 Ventura St. Bonaventure
Small but explosive.
On Film–This guy really impresses you with his determination, blazing speed, and cutting ability. Defenses have one heck of a time containing him, he runs low to the ground, and does a great job of following blockers and then exploding through holes before defenders know what hit them. He needs to add weight and strength but the instincts are certainly there.
Stats–Carried the ball 128 times for 1,420 yds and 18 TDs averaging 9½ yds per carry. He fumbled just once all season.
Grades–His GPA is 3.2. Benches 275 and has a 30" VJ.
Favorite Schools–AZ, FRESNO STATE, CAL, UCLA, USC, and ASU.
••• LeJon Mason 5-9, 175, 4.5 Fresno Sunnyside
Here's another small back who put together one heck of a junior campaign.
On Film–He can cut on a dime and has been blessed with very good vision and instincts. He knows how to find the hole and once he gets there, look out. A slasher who is one of the more elusive backs in northern California. Not real strong, but not an easy tackle either.
Stats–Carried the ball 124 times for 1,154 yds and 11 TDs averaging 10 yds per carry.
Other Sports–He's been timed in an 11 flat 100 meters in track.
Grades–His GPA is 3.5. Benches 240 and has a 33" VJ.

••• Jacob Holloway 5-10, 180, 4.49 Fresno Sunnyside
Teams with Mason to form quite a duo in the Sunnyside running game.
On Film–Like Mason, Holloway is fast and elusive with excellent vision. Not real strong, he needs to add some weight and strength but shows good running instincts.
Stats–Carried the ball 52 times for 500 yds and 5 TDs. He also caught 7 passes for 209 yds and 1 score. At CB he totaled 56 tackles and 3 picks.

Big Backs
••••• Malcolm Jones 6-0, 220, 4.5 Westlake Village Oaks Christian
There are so many blue chip backs in the state of California this year that I decided to split them. Malcolm, of course, is a tailback but he's also a big back.
On Film–He is a difference maker for the highly productive Oaks Christian offense. He runs with great leg strength, vision, balance, and purpose. Not an easy tackle, he can lower his shoulder and make defenders pay for the tackle. He shows an outstanding initial burst, runs downhill, has the speed to turn the corner, and the body control that allows him to quickly change directions and keep defenses on their toes. Add that to the fact that he can run between the tackles as well as any back in the state and you've got yourself a high school difference. His best game was the 2006 state championship game in which Malcolm dominated from start to finish. He's been a big name for the past couple of years in high school circles in the southern California area and rightly so.
Stats–Carried the ball 141 times for 1,548 yds and 26 TDs averaging 10 yds per carry. He also caught 29 passes for 400 yds and 6 TDs. On defense he totaled 40 tackles and 2 picks at LB.
Grades–His GPA is 3.7. Benches 295 and has a 35" VJ.
Favorite Schools–With his brother Marshall Jones playing at USC the Trojans lead UCLA, AZ, OR, NOTRE DAME, CAL, CO, OK, and STANFORD.
••••+ Trajuan Briggs 5-11, 198, 4.5 Van Nuys Birmingham
Somewhat forgotten among all the great RB prospects in the L.A. area this season.
On Film–Once you see Trajuan on film you will not forget him. He's a great combination of power, speed, strength, vision, and balance. As good as any back in the L.A. area. He was definitely on in the Narbonne game in which he had 23 carries for 184 yds and 2 TDs despite being a marked man from the start. I'm impressed with his ability to run through tackles, his moves, and balance. He's awfully tough to knock off his feet and he's as dependable as they come with game breaking ability. The key to Mr. Briggs' game is his ability to accelerate quickly and then cut on a dime.
Stats–Last season he carried the ball 173 times for 1,513 yds and 23 TDs averaging 8.7 yds per carry and he fumbled just once all season.
Other Sports–He's been timed in a 10.8 100 and a 22 flat meters in track.
Grades–His GPA is 2.7. Benches 250.
Favorite Schools–His cousin, Matt Clark, played ball at UCLA and with the Saints and Eagles. Committed to USC.
••••+ Cameron Roberson 6-1, 217, 4.55 Newbury Park
One of the best big backs west of the Mississippi, Cam comes to play every game.
On Film–He's been blessed with great size, speed, and enormous strength. He's a workhorse type of a back and a complete back who can run, catch, and block. For proof just check out the Simi Valley game in which he dominated totaling 284 yds and 4 TDs in just the first three quarters. His also shows good body control, change of direction, he can accelerate quickly, and has enough burst and lateral speed to get to the outside and cause damage. A leader both on and off the field, Cam has what it takes to play for any school in the country. Although he does not play any defense, he has the built and the aggressiveness of a linebacker.
Stats–Rushed for 1,450 yds and 18 TDs in '08 and also caught 3 passes for 250 yds and 3 scores.
Other Sports–He's been timed in a 10.9 100 meters in track.
Grades–His GPA is 3.1. Benches 375 and has a 34" VJ.
Favorite Schools–UCLA, NOTRE DAME, OR, AZ, BYU, MN, WA, NORTHWESTERN, and STANFORD.
•••• Anthony Wilkerson 6-0, 210, 4.5 Tustin
I just can't help remarking that I've never seen so many blue chip backs in one area as I have in southern California this year.
On Film–#32 fits perfectly into that category, he's a big back with brilliant speed, great vision, and tremendous strength. Anthony has what it takes to become a difference maker at the college level and to be an impact player as a true freshman. For proof all you've got to do is check out the Magnolia game in which he had 13 carries for 268 yds. When the defense isn't careful, he will burn you on just about every carry. He runs exceptionally well between the tackles, keeps his pads low, shows very good leg strength, and some natural quickness for a 210 pounder. He does a good job of following blockers and shows pretty good moves out in the open field. If he picks the right school, he should be a force as a true freshman.
Stats–Carried the ball 270 times for 2,300 yds and 36 TDs averaging close to 8 yds per carry last season.
Other Sports–He's been timed in a 10.7 100 meters in track. Averages 5 pts and 5 rebounds a game as a guard in basketball.
Grades–His GPA is 3.8. Benches 320 and has a 35" VJ.
Favorite Schools–Committed to STANFORD.
•••• Deonte Cooper 5-11, 190, 4.47 Perris Citrus Hill
He's called unbelievable by his coach.
On Film–I would call him elusive and exceptionally productive. Here's yet another back with All-American ability. He could make an impact as a true freshman and certainly has the speed and production to do just that. Deonte shows a soft pair of hands, the ability to create in the open field, and blazing speed. He doesn't need many moves to beat the defense to the punch but he does have them. He also shows the kind of home run speed the colleges love to see. He can play RB, WR, or CB at the next level. Not yet super strong, but he's very tough to knock off his feet because of his exceptional balance. I was impressed with just about every game I watched on his highlight film, and with a few more additional pounds and strength, look out.
Stats–Rushed for 2,948 yds and 43 TDs averaging 11 yds per carry in '08.
Other Sports–He's been timed in a 10.6 100 meters.
Grades–His GPA is over a 2.5. Has a 32" VJ.
Favorite Schools–STANFORD, WA, AZ, CO, ASU, NE, USC, and UCLA.
•••+ Melvin Davis 6-2, 235, 4.55 Harbor City Narbonne
When you talk about your big backs you must mention Mr. Davis.
On Film–This guy can block and he's exceptional in short yardage situations. He runs between the tackles as well as any big back in the city, keeps his feet moving at all times, keeps his pads low, and is a punishing back who gets significant yardage after contact. He also shows a good pair of hands coming out of the backfield.
Stats–Earned some All-League mention for his play at RB.
Grades–His GPA is over a 2.5.
Favorite Schools–Committed to WASHINGTON.
•••+ Devontae Butler 5-11, 180, 4.5 Sacramento Grant
He's called a major talent by a couple of the Sacramento coaches I talked with.
On Film–This guy does it all, he runs with excellent speed, burst, vision, balance, and surprising strength. I was impressed with his ability to get outside quickly and turn the corner, and once he gets a half step on a defender, it's all over. He can also lower his pads, slam into defenders, and gain significant yardage after contact. One of the more explosive backs in northern California.
Stats–Earned All-State honors in '08 after carrying the ball 197 times for 1,954 yds and 37 TDs averaging 9.9 yds per carry.
Grades–His GPA is over a 2.0.
••• Derek Stewart 5-10, 190, 4.5 San Jose Piedmont Hills
Travelling a little bit under the radar up in northern California but believe me this young man can play the game.
On Film–Proving to be an all around back, he's versatile and can run, catch, and block. He shows good work habits, the willingness to run between the tackles, and the speed enough to get outside and turn the corner. Reliable, dependable, and productive.
Stats–Carried the ball 165 times for 1,065 yds and 10 TDs averaging 6½ yds per carry. He also caught 9 passes for 133 yds. His best came was against Lincoln in which he rushed for 185 yds and 3 TDs, and made 5 tackles at LB.
Grades–His GPA is 2.5. Benches 265.
Favorite Schools–CAL, OR, UCLA, AZ, BOISE STATE, and NE.
••• Jordan Allen 5-10, 192, 4.6 Santa Ana Mater Dei
A terrific two-way player with the athletic ability to play on either side of the ball in college.
On Film–You've got to be impressed with his footwork at the RB position. He shows great balance and almost always makes the first person miss. A very elusive 192 pounder, he does not have blazing speed but workable speed. He seems to be going even faster because of his moves and cutting ability. He's also a hard hitter with great range at SS/LB on defense. He plays big in big games and scored 3 TDs in the Servite game last November.
Stats–Carried the ball 71 times for 500 yds and 8 TDs. He caught 4 passes for 97 yds and 1 score. He totaled 40 tackles at LB.
Grades–His GPA is over a 2.5. Benches 245.
Favorite Schools–His father played ball at Arizona. Jordan's favorites are AZ, UCLA, ASU, TN, OR, and OR STATE.
••• Princeton Fuimaono 5-11, 185, 4.5 Long Beach Jordan
He made a name for himself at a couple of combines over the past two years.
On Film–He has also made a name for himself at the RB and OLB positions. A hard runner with good leg strength, he can get you the tough inside yards. More of a north/south runner, he keeps his legs moving at all times. On defense he shows very good range, excels in pass defense, can redirect, and can break down and make plays in space.
Stats–Earned some All-League mention for his play at RB and OLB.
Grades–His GPA is over a 2.0.

On Film–Woody shows the speed, quickness, hands and heart to make a difference on either side of the ball. An impact player, he's a sure handed receiver with outstanding moves in the open field. He plays big in big games and is a strong receiver who can absorb a hard hit, keep his feet, and hang onto the ball. He's a playmaker and a home run threat. The #1 WR prospect in northern California, all Josh does is make plays and he makes them on a regular basis.
On Film–A big, sturdy receiver, he's very active and seems to catch everything within reach, and even some passes that appear not to be within reach. He has great lower body strength to break tackles and gain significant yardage after the reception. He can go get the ball like no one's business, does a real good job of catching the ball over his shoulder, and can create after the catch. His vision, hands, and football knowledge make him one heck of a ball player.

•••+ Anthony Jefferson 6-2, 185, 4.5 Los Angeles Cathedral
Still another explosive WR with good hands and great leaping ability.
On Film–#8 is a fairly physical receiver. Very athletic, he shows strong hands, deceptive speed, good zone awareness, and he makes easy adjustments to off target throws. And he can trap the deep ball with ease. He is also a hard hitter on defense, he can turn his hips, and excels in pass coverage. Very impressive in the open field.
Stats–Caught 50 passes for 921 yds and 9 TDs averaging 18 yds per catch as a junior. He totaled 80 tackles, 3 picks, 4 caused fumbles and 11 passes broken up at CB. His coach believes he'll be an impact player at the next level and I concur.

Nicknamed Mits and for good reason.

•••+ Kaelin Clay 5-10, 165, 4.4 Long Beach Poly
A small, quick, and athletic receiver with big play capabilities.
On Film–#4 appears to be set to follow in the great tradition of wide receivers coming from the Poly program. He presents strong hands and a great attitude to the WR position. He shows nice juke moves, is a good downfield blocker, and does whatever it takes to help his team. In the Compton game he had 4 catches for 156 yds and 2 TDs, and in the Grant game he had 4 catches for 93 yds and 1 score.

The son of David Hill who played in the NFL, Austin is quickly making a name for himself in the prep ranks.
On Film–He's a natural athlete and a smooth runner. He shows good body control, quickness, and balance. He gets into his routes quickly and shows a sharp burst out of his breaks. A leaper who catches the ball at its highest point, he has game breaking potential and really came on the second half of last season.

Favorite Schools–AZ, NORTHWESTERN, ASU, UCLA, USC, UNLV, and UTAH.
•••+ Tevin Carter 6-3, 190, 4.55 Los Angeles Santee
I must admit I had never ventured to Santee Education School before, perhaps Tevin will be starting a trend.
On Film–This guy has eye-popping stats. It seemed to me every time I watched him on film he was catching a long pass for a TD, and it wasn't just the highlight tape, his stats are remarkable. Granted the competition's not great but Tevin has great height, strong hands, workable speed, he can create in the open field, and has been blessed with a lot of confidence.
Stats–Caught 26 passes for an eye-popping 819 yds and 11 TDs averaging 31½ yds per catch. He also totaled 92 tackles, 2 picks, and 4 forced fumbles at FS on his way to earning All-City honors on both sides of the ball.
Grades–His GPA is over a 2.0.
Favorite Schools–Committed to CALIFORNIA.
•••+ Edward Dillihunt 5-11, 190, 4.5 Tulare Union
Another one of northern California's finest.
On Film–#3 does all the little things needed to become an outstanding WR in Division I ball. He's an excellent downfield blocker, runs well after the catch, knows how to get open and is not afraid of contact. For proof check out the Porterville game in which he had a 76-yard TD reception and a 78-yard punt return for a score. Very quick, he has an excellent burst.

••• Marquess Wilson 6-4, 180, 4.49 Tulare Union
Teams with Ed Dillihunt to form quite a pass catching duo for Union High.
On Film–He's quick off the ball, shows very good agility, gets in and out of his cuts quickly, and catches everything within reach. He has huge hands and does a good job of catching the ball away from his body. His big game last year had him totaling 212 yds and 3 TDs. A very effective red zone receiver.
Stats–Caught 37 passes for 898 yds and totaled 17 TDs overall. He also had 3 picks at CB.

••• Blake Stanton 6-1, 202, 4.5 Encino Crespi
Two words, quick and explosive, that best describes Mr. Stanton.
On Film–His coach calls him a blue chipper and I call him a reliable receiver with deceptive speed, strong hands, and excellent body control. In fact, he shows Division I skills at both the WR and DB positions. The first game on his film has him catching 200 yds worth of passes and making 19 tackles and 1 pick, which he returned for a TD.
Stats–Overall he had 28 catches for over 600 yds and 5 TDs. He totaled 60 tackles and 5 picks on defense.

Favorite Schools–UCLA, CAL, ASU, AZ, OR, and WSU.
Future All-American
Victor Blackwell 6-0, 190, 4.4 Santa Ana Mater Dei
He will rank as one of the top WR prospects in the west next season.
On Film–Victor's strength is his ability to run with the ball after the catch. He's exceptional in space, he causes defenders fits with his moves and burst, shows good hands, and the ability to quickly turn up field for positive yardage. Has that burst and pure speed that college scouts are looking for in a WR and he certainly has what it takes to become an elite player by next year.
Stats–Caught 38 passes for 650 yds and 8 scores averaging 17 yds per catch as a sophomore. He had a couple of kickoff returns for TDs.
Other Sports–He's been timed in a 21.5 200 meters in track.
Grades–His GPA is 2.5.
Favorite Schools–Early on it looks like USC and UCLA are leading the way over ASU, CAL, OR, and NOTRE DAME.
Future All-American
Devin Lucien 6-2, 185, 4.6 Encino Crespi
This school has a good number of potential Division I players in the senior class but Devin looks like the real deal in the junior class.
On Film–As a sophomore he came ready to play every game, shows the ability to stretch a defense, and was particularly good in the red zone. He has very good hands, can leap over people, and surprises them with his deceptive speed. He had a terrific game against Notre Dame High.
Stats–Caught 23 passes for close to 500 yds and 11 TDs averaging 20 yds per catch as a sophomore.
Other Sports–He's been timed in an 11.3 100 meters in track.
Grades–His GPA is 2.8.
Favorite Schools–WA, VA TECH, WV, FL, OR, and AZ.
Future All-American
Blair Holliday 6-3, 170, 4.68 Westlake Village Oaks Christian
This school appears to have as much talent as some small colleges and next year you will have to keep your eye on Mr. Holliday.
On Film–At the WR position he's a tall, athletic receiver with decent speed, great leaping ability, and strong hands. Catching everything within reach, he runs precise routes and knows how to get open.
Stats–He caught 27 passes for 450 yds and 7 TDs averaging 16.7 yds per catch.
Grades–His GPA is 3.5. He has a 33" VJ.
Favorite Schools–STANFORD, UCLA, and CAL.
Future All-American
Jajuan Hammond 6-2, 270, 4.65 Fresno Bullard
Bullard High is back on the map and one of the main reasons is #11 Mr. Hammond.
On Film–He wins almost every jump ball battle, shows good hands, runs crisp routes, and he's a good downfield blocker. Not a blazer but knows what to do with the ball after the catch.

Tight Ends
••••• Ronald Powell 6-4, 240, 4.78 Moreno Valley Rancho Verde
To be honest with you Ronald would have earned five stars if I had put him at TE or DE. He has All-American ability at both positions so let's first talk about him at the TE spot.
On Film–In person he is one of the most confident, bordering on cocky, players I've seen around the country this year. However, after you watch him on film you can understand why he has so much confidence. As a receiver he shows soft hands, catches the ball easily and away from his body, he can turn up field in the blink of an eye, and is also a physical blocker. He's been blessed with quick hands and the burst and later speed to keep a defender out in front of him. Has a big frame and he could weigh 260 in college. On defense he's exceptionally fast off the edge, has a very quick first step, can help collapse the pocket, runs well laterally, and has been blessed with excellent closing speed. He obviously has what it takes to make an impact as a true freshman and Powie would not have it any other way. As a pass rusher he's not as quick as Devon Kennard, but just as powerful or more powerful, and gets the job done the same way with his explosive moves out of his stance and his ability to stay on his feet and chase ball carriers. Exceptional when in pursuit, he can handle double teams and has the closing burst that's as quick as any 240 pounder in the country. Physically he looks like he's been in college for four years, he's a big muscular kid. If he stays healthy, he's almost a lock for All-American honors.
Stats–Recorded over 80 tackles, 13 sacks, 28 tackles for losses on defense, and averaged over 15 yds per catch on offense.
Grades–His GPA is around a 3.0. Benches 375 and has a very impressive 37" VJ.
Favorite Schools–His uncle, Paco Craig, played for UCLA and the Detroit Lions. Most people figure Ronald's favorites will be either USC or UCLA but that has not kept all the other majors from jumping into the battle. You've got OH STATE, NOTRE DAME, FL, AUBURN, CAL, WA, ORE, ASU, TN, OK, and NE in the mix.
•••• Randall Telfer 6-4, 225, 4.69 Rancho Cucamonga
If he weighed 20 pounds more, he would be a five-star rated TE.
On Film–He's a downfield threat and a sure handed receiver who catches everything within reach. He possesses great hand/eye coordination. Randall is also the top blocking TE in California, he seems to do everything well and with ease. He can get separation after the catch, can out run most defenders, knows how to get open, catches the ball away from his body, and has been one of the more reliable receivers in the conference over the past two years. His film shows a very athletic and confident two way end. Unlike Ronald Powell, Randall is a sure bet to remain at the TE position once he gets to college. The Carter game showed his pass receiving skills in which he caught 5 passes for 89 yards and also displayed his outstanding speed.
Stats–He caught 44 passes for 678 yds and 5 TDs averaging 16.7 yds per catch.
Grades–His GPA is 3.0. Benches 295 and has a 33" VJ.
Favorite Schools–Committed to USC.
•••• Christian Thomas 6-4, 238, 4.8 Palmdale Highland
Here is another TE with great feet, quickness, and smarts. Has the potential to become a five-star player down the line but right now he is a dependable TE who can get off the line quickly. He shows sure hands and can run with the ball after the catch. He needs to work on his blocking but the athletic ability is certainly there.
On Film–He is a confident TE who takes off on his pass routes and goes hard on every down. He shows good balance, strong hands, and lateral quickness. He can turn up field quickly and has proven to be a tough tackle. Like Telfer and Powell, Christian is also a candidate for the DE position. He is blessed with long arms and could weigh 260 pounds in college.
Stats–Last season he caught 39 passes for 550 yds averaging 14 yds per catch.
Grades–His GPA is over 2.5.
Favorite Schools–USC, UCLA, CAL, WA, TN, FSU, and CO.
•••+ John Young 6-4, 250, 4.86 Los Angeles Loyola
Coaches at Loyola said that John has tremendous upside and I believe them.
On Film–This guy has already proven he could be a Division I blocking TE. He is an aggressive ball player who has a wide base and is very aggressive as a run blocker, almost serving as a third tackle. When he is given a chance to catch the ball on a run-oriented team, he shows good hands, runs precise routes, and can turn up field quickly. He dominated the St. John-Bosco game as both a receiver and blocker.
Stats–He caught 15 passes for 200 yds and 1 TD. He also played some tackle on defense.
Other Sports–He averages 5 pts and 8 rebounds a game as a center in basketball.
Grades–His GPA is 3.6. Benches 300.
Favorite Schools–UCLA, STANFORD, FSU, UNLV, CAL, and BOSTON COLLEGE.
••• Pierce Richardson 6-4, 230, 4.8 Encino Crespi
His coaches told me he was a worthy replacement last year for Joe Fauria.
On Film– He presents good size, strong hands, and outstanding blocking skills to the TE position. He even played a little WR last year because the coaches were so confident in his burst and agility. Pierce creates mismatches with his size, leaping ability, and quickness off the ball. He catches everything within reach. You have to be impressed with his ability to run with the ball after the catch. Most defenders have been surprised by his quickness and moves. As a run blocker he stays with his blocks until the whistle. He runs well laterally and can redirect.
Stats–He caught 10 passes for 188 yds in '08 averaging almost 19 yds per catch.
Grades–His GPA is 2.6. Benches 265 and has a 29" VJ.
Favorite Schools–WA, UCLA, NOTRE DAME, PURDUE, UNLV, ASU, IOWA STATE, WY, UTAH STATE, and CAL.
••• Tyler Perry 6-5, 230, 4.9 Ventura Buena
Buena High presents Tyler Perry. I'm sure he has not heard that before but there is no kidding about this young man's future.
On Film–He impresses everyone with his overall athletic ability at the TE and OLB positions. Check out the San Marcos game in which he picked off 2 passes at LB and caught 5 passes for 130 yds and 2 TDs. When he is on he is on. Quicker than his 4.9 speed would indicate, Tyler is a sure-handed receiver who does a good job of placing his body between the ball and the defender.
Stats–He caught 27 passes for 312 yds and 5 TDs.
Other Sports–He averages 8 pts and 6 rebounds a game as a PFW in basketball.
Grades–His GPA is 3.2. Benches 185 twelve times and has a 28" VJ.
Favorite Schools–OR, CO, UNLV, ASU, WSU, OR STATE, NM STATE, and AZ.
Future All-American
Dillon Van der Wal 6-7, 215, 4.8 Westlake Village Oaks Christian
He is nicknamed Big Bird for the obvious reason. Head Coach Bill Redell calls Dillon a diamond in the rough and a good athlete.
On Film–He shows good athletic ability, hands, and vision. He obviously needs to add weight and strength but the athletic ability is there for him to excel at the next level.
Other Sports– He averages 10 pts and 10 rebounds a game as an FW in basketball.
Grades–His GPA is 3.0.
Favorite Schools–ASU, VANDY, TX, USC, STANFORD, and NOTRE DAME.

Weston Stutz 6-2, 225, 4.7 San Diego Horizon
Offensive Tackles
••••+ Erik Kohler 6-5, 285, 4.99 Westlake Village Oaks Christian
He was in the magazine last year as a Future All-American and this year as a definite All-American.
On Film–#75 excels as both a run and pass blocker. I was amazed at his quickness and his ability to get out into the open field and block down on linebackers. As nimble footed as they come, he should wind up playing tackle in college. Has the quickness, balance, change of direction, and the mentality to play either tackle or guard. He shows natural power to dominate the point of attack, always seems to get good positioning, stays low and can get under the defender to drive them out of the play, and just seems to do everything well and effortlessly. He is a powerhouse of an LT who dominated the CIF championship game against Serra.
Stats–Earned All-League and All-Area honors for his play at LT.
Other Sports–He has thrown the shot put over 47' and the discus 115' in track.
Grades–His GPA is 3.3. Benches 350 and has a 27" VJ.
Favorite Schools–STANFORD, UCLA, AZ, CAL, NOTRE DAME, ASU, and WA. His grandfather played ball at Oklahoma.
•••• Chris Ward 6-6, 300, 5.3 Santa Ana Mater Dei
He was another future All-American in our 2008 magazine.
On Film–Chris dominated the competition as a junior showing vast improvement over his sophomore year. His quickness off the line is exceptional. He shows very good footwork and he puts a lot of power into his initial strike. He was very consistent throughout the year but was even better in the Servite game helping Mater Dei beat Servite for the 20th straight time. He shows excellent technique, is aggressive, and stays with his blocks until the whistle. He plays tackle in high school but could play tackle or guard in college. He is fundamentally sound with a great attitude.
Stats–Earned All-League and All-Area honors for his play at OT in '08.
Grades–His GPA is 3.0. Benches 285.
Favorite Schools–UCLA, CAL, STANFORD, WA, WSU, and AZ.
•••• Matt Jakubiec 6-8, 305, 5.0 Anaheim Servite
Here is a ball player that really hasn't gotten the respect he deserves by the college scouts.
On Film–This guy really impresses you with the way he battles on every play. He has been blessed with great size, long arms, and very quick feet. He shows natural strength and comes off the ball with purpose. He plays until the whistle and is one of the more aggressive OL prospects in the west. He also shows enough movement skills to protect the edge. Not exceptionally fast but he is quick in a limited space. It has been my experience that tackles who eventually make it in college start out the way Matt has started out. They are still growing into their bodies and still working on their body control and agility. Matt has the frame to weigh 330 pounds in college and still look thin.
Stats–He dominated at times, particularly in the Mater-Dei game in which he recorded 12 pancake blocks.
Grades–His GPA is over 2.5.
Favorite Schools–Committed to ARIZONA.
•••• Alejondro Crosthwaite 6-5, 306, 5.3 San Diego Cathedral Catholic
If you are looking for a tackle with great size, excellent initial quickness, good footwork, and a fantastic attitude look no further than #90.
On Film–Alex has led each of the past two years from his OT position. He already excels as a pass blocker using his long arms, quick hands and even quicker feet to hold back would-be sackers. He shows very good straight-ahead speed and dominates the point of attack with his strength and leverage. The consummate OT, he carries his 306 pounds well. Always seems to stay out in front of his man, gets good positioning, and then lets his strength and quickness take over.
Stats–He earned All-San Diego Area honors for his play at OT and dominated in the state championship game.
Grades–His GPA is 2.8. Benches 335.
Favorite Schools–Committed to CAL.
••• Ben Loth 6-5, 295, 5.1 Encino Crespi
Here is another tackle who could wind up playing either guard or tackle at the next level.
On Film–#75 is aggressive and really gets after it on every play. He is an excellent drive blocker who keeps his feet moving. Never lets up until the whistle, his coaches brag about his attitude and work ethic. He should weigh 320 pounds in college. He has a great chance of becoming dominating once he gains strength.
Stats–He earned All-League honors for his play at OT.
Other Sports–He averages 10 pts and 10 rebounds a game in basketball.
Grades–His GPA is 3.4.
Favorite Schools–UCLA, WA, UNLV, and WSU.
••• Ben Gottschalk 6-5, 250, 4.9 Sherman Oaks Notre Dame
He obviously needs to add some weight and strength but, believe me, this young man can play the game.
On Film–#64 is exceptional when in pass protection and is one of the quicker tackles in the state. Shows flexibility, footwork, and an intensity rarely seen in OTs. He has an aggressive style of play and never lets up. Shows natural athletic ability, is quick to set up in pass protection, and can get out on the second level to block off linebackers. Although he only weighs 250 pounds, he does have the frame to get up to 300 pounds.
Stats–He led his team in pancake blocks in '08 on his way to earning All-Conference honors. He was dominant in almost every game but particularly the games against Orange Lutheran, Compton, Crespi, and Saugus.

Offensive Guard and Centers
•••• Giovanni DiPoalo 6-4, 260, 4.85 Ventura St. Bonaventure
An LT in high school who could wind up playing guard in college.
On Film–He shows excellent speed for a 260 pounder. He is tenacious, does a great job of finishing his blocks, is very athletic, and strong for his size. A consistently aggressive ball player who plays a physical brand of football with a mean streak a mile long. He always seems to get good positioning and can pull and trap. He has the frame to weigh 300 pounds in college. He impresses you with his second level of blocking ability, speed, and athleticism.

Coach Bob Johnson raves about this young man's potential as either an OT or OG.
On Film–He plays both positions and plays them well. Quick for his size, he plays with good leverage and balance, and is rarely on the ground. He improved by leaps and bounds his junior year and big things are expected of him this season. Very disciplined, he shows pretty quick feet for an OL and he can quickly redirect.

•••+ Daniel Munyer 6-3½, 260, 4.9 Sherman Oaks Notre Dame
This might be the #1 OC prospect in the state.
On Film–#52 is very strong in the legs, can stay low, and can drive people off the ball. He is a natural knee bender who always seems to stay out in front of his man, gets good positioning, and uses his strength to take defenders where he wants them. Another key is that he plays until the whistle. He shows very good lateral quickness and can mirror and slide with the best of them.
Stats–Did not allow a sack in '08 and totaled 20 tackles and 3 sacks at DT.
Other Sports–Has thrown the shot put over 50' and the discus 150' in track.
Grades–His GPA is 3.3. Benches 270 and has a 33" VJ.

A 265 pounder with outstanding athletic ability.
On Film–Chandler is a big guy who can move his feet, does a good job of extending his arms, and keeping pass rushers away from the pocket. A natural knee bender who takes good angles to his blocks and is almost always in good position. He is a very impressive high school RT who could wind up playing OG in college. ••••+ Eddie Plantaric 6-5, 245, 4.59 Fair Oaks Del Campo
The top defensive lineman in northern California, Eddie is also the top TE in northern California.
On Film–He seems to do everything effortlessly, whether he's playing TE, WR, FB, DE, OLB, or DT. He is very close to being a five-star player, particularly if you watch the Ponderosa game in which he totaled 23 tackles (a school record). A big and muscular kid with the frame to weigh 280 pounds in college, he could wind up playing DT. He is very strong and dominates at the point of attack. Just an explosive 245 pounder who shows exceptional initial quickness off the ball. He is one of the best hand fighters in high school ball and plays the game with a chip on his shoulder. An effective bull-rusher, he can push the pocket back into the quarterback, shows great awareness, and can change directions. He shows pretty good closing speed. In my opinion he is better at DT than DE.
Stats–He recorded 141 tackles, 4½ sacks, 6 caused fumbles on his way to earning All-State honors in '08.
Other Sports–He has thrown the discus 161' 9".
Grades–His GPA is a perfect 4.0 and he scored a 1660 on the SAT. Benches 315.
Favorite Schools–Committed to STANFORD.
••••+ Josh Shirley 6-3, 220, 4.53 Fontana Kaiser
It may be stretching it to say Josh is 6-3 but it is not stretching it to say that he is one of the fastest and strongest DE prospects west of the Mississippi.
On Film–#93 shows the outstanding quickness, great strength, speed to the ball, agility, moves, and aggressiveness needed to become an All-American in college. However, the key to his game is his flat out speed. For a 220 pounder he is aggressive, dominates the point of attack, and can collapse the pocket. His highlight film shows him playing everywhere along the defensive line.
Stats–He recorded 88 tackles, 17 sacks, 37 tackles for losses, 3 caused fumbles, and batted down 12 passes on his way to earning All-State honors. He also played some TE on offense.
Grades–His GPA is 3.3. Benches 355 and has a 35" VJ.
Favorite Schools–TN, CAL, UCLA, USC, NOTRE DAME, ASU, MIAMI, NE, STANFORD, and WA.
••••+ Justin Utupo 6-2, 240, 4.8 Lakewood
You could overlook his lack of size, his average speed, and his good strength once you watch Justin play.
On Film–He lines up at the DT position and never lets up. Exceptionally quick for a 240 pounder, he always seems to get a jump on the blocker. He beats everyone he goes up against to the punch. Shows exceptional instincts and a first step worthy of a college All-American. He runs well laterally and can redirect. For proof just check out the Long Beach Poly game. He has the frame to weigh 280 pounds in college, is a muscular kid who can make plays from sideline to sideline, and he locates the ball quickly and is a devastating tackler.
Stats–He recorded 78 stops, 10 sacks, 30 tackles for losses, and 3 caused fumbles as a junior.
Grades–His GPA is 2.8. Benches 315 and has a 32" VJ.
Favorite Schools–UCLA, BYU, OR, UT, ASU, WSU, WA, KS STATE, UT, NE, NOTRE DAME, and OR STATE.
•••• Kirifi Leuta-Taula 6-4, 285, 5.0 Anaheim Servite
A definite big-time player.
On Film–He shows a rare combination of size, power, and quickness. He plays the DT position with a lot of confidence, shows exceptionally quick hands, moves, and dominates the point of attack. Very fluid for his size, he has to be double and sometimes triple teamed at all times. He does a good job of getting into gaps and disrupting the flow of the offense.
Stats–Earned All-Catholic League honors for his play at DT in '08. He made a name for himself in the Edison game in which he had 3 sacks and 8 QB hurries.
Other Sports–He has thrown the shot put 48' and the discus 145' in track.
Grades–His GPA is 3.1.
Favorite Schools–USC, CAL, UCLA, OR STATE, AZ, OR, ASU, CO, and NE.
•••+ Shane Pennix 6-3½, 256, 4.8 El Cajon Valhalla
One of the fastest rising DE prospects in the west.
On Film–#84 shows exceptional speed off the ball, can accelerate quickly, dominates the point of attack, and has the stamina to go 100% throughout the entire game. Very agile, he's been blessed with long arms, which helps him disengage quickly, and has a terrific up field burst. He looks thin at 256 pounds but has the frame to weigh 280 pounds in college. He does a great job of shedding blockers and finding the ball.
Stats–Recorded 75 tackles, 12 sacks, 35 tackles for losses, and 3 caused fumbles at DE on his way to earning All-League honors.
Grades–His GPA is over 2.5.
Favorite Schools–His cousin, Tujuan Baile, played at Penn State. His favorite schools are UCLA, USC, SAN DIEGO STATE, ASU, OR, and FL.
•••+ Dakota Smith 6-7, 335, 5.3 Los Angeles Westchester
The son of former USC All-American Tody Smith, Dak, like his father, also has the tools to become a dominant player at the college level.
On Film–Not yet there but shows terrific upside at both the DT and OT positions. After watching him on film I believe he may have a better future if he played OT with his long arms, quick feet, and great size. He can bend his knees, gets good leverage, and runs well laterally. He can contribute on either side of the ball, and once he becomes more consistent, look out. You cannot teach size and Dak has it in abundance.
Grades–His GPA is 4.0. Benches 310.
Favorite Schools–Committed to USC.
Use last year's picture – Future All-American Defensive Linemen, CA
•••+ Cassius Marsh 6-4, 275, 4.9 Westlake Village Oaks Christian
A power house of a DL, he's better suited to play DT at the next level.
On Film–His quickness off the ball is what makes him a potential All-American. Loves to mix it up and is exceptionally aggressive with a good work ethic, he comes at you on every play and never lets up. Super strong at the point of attack, he is a brick wall against the run, shows very good initial quickness, and the ability to split the double team and apply pressure on the QB. He can also redirect quickly and does a very good job of finding the ball. He has unlimited potential.
Stats–Earned All-League honors for his play at DT for the second year in a row.
Grades–His GPA is over 3.0.

•••+ Willie Flowers 6-4, 245, 4.9 Fresno Edison
A powerful, explosive ball player with a great first step.
On Film–His ability to get down the line is second to none, shows a good center of gravity, plays the game on his feet, and with a great attitude. Has a nasty streak, he's relentless, and uses his hands well. He does a good job of forcing the action. I was very impressed with his play against Dominguez where he physically manhandled everyone he went up against.
Stats–He recorded 65 tackles, 5 sacks, and 10 tackles for losses as a junior.
Other Sports–Was Valley Champ in wrestling with a 25 and 7 record.
Grades–His GPA is 3.4. Benches 305.
Favorite Schools–Committed to UCLA.
•••+ George Uko 6-4, 285, 5.1 Chino Don Lugo
It's not a great year for D-Line prospects in the state of California but one of the up and comers is definitely Mr. Uko.
On Film–He does a great job of holding the point of attack with good natural strength. He's not yet a powerhouse but shows very good football strength, has good initial quickness, and gets into gaps and disrupts the offensive flow more times than not. The key to his game is not making a lot of tackles but occupying a lot of blockers until the linebackers can make the stop, and he does a very good job at that. Has the frame to weigh over 300 pounds. If he can keep his quickness, look out.
Stats–Earned All-League honors for his play at DT.
Grades–His GPA is over a 2.0. Benches 310.
Favorite Schools–USC, UCLA, TN, WA, OK, NE, CAL, CO, and ASU.
•••+ Alani Fua 6-6, 205, 4.7 Westlake Village Oaks Christian
The word here is patience.
On Film–You are going to need patience for Alani to add weight and strength but believe me, the athletic ability is certainly there. When you watch him on film his speed off the ball, quickness off the edge, his ability to quickly disengage, and closing burst are all top-notch. He helped lead Oaks Christian to a CIF championship last season. Offensive linemen have one heck of a time keeping this very athletic 205 pounder away from their QB.
Stats–He recorded 63 tackles, 7 sacks, 12 tackles for losses, and 3 caused fumbles last season.
Grades–His GPA is 2.7.
Favorite Schools–He has a few members of his family that have gone onto college ball including Sione Fua at Stanford. His favorite schools are UCLA, STANFORD, BYU, CAL, USC, OH STATE, WA, HI, ASU, and OR STATE.

This school sure has a lot of Division I players this year and Mr. Grasu is one of the more intriguing ones.
On Film–He is very athletic, smart, and shows good quickness. He needs to develop more consistency but certainly has the size, quick hands, and burst the college scouts are looking for. Big things are expected of him this season and he shouldn't disappoint. He carries his 255 pounds well, has a relentless style of play, and is best suited to remain as DE in college.
Stats–Recorded 30 tackles and 3 sacks in '08.

••• Andrew Hudson 6-3, 225, 4.8 Redlands East Valley
A teammate of QB Tyler Shreve.
On Film–Andrew shows a lot of potential at the DE position. Right now he's built like an OLB but could grow into a down lineman. Aggressive, quick, and athletic, he can bend off the edge and shows very good closing speed.
Favorite Schools–OR STATE, AZ, USC, ASU, TN, UTAH, and WA.
••• Marques Johnson 6-1, 345, 5.5 Los Angeles Westchester

Stats–Recorded 98 tackles, 5 sacks, and 12 tackles for losses as a junior.
Grades–His GPA is 3.7. Benches 335.
Favorite Schools–CAL, USC, OR, ASU, UCLA, and WA.
Future All-American
Mustafa Jalil 6-4, 300, 5.0 San Diego Cathedral Catholic
He will be one of the most recruited DT prospects in the nation next season.
On Film–#71 impresses you with his ability to stop the run, split the double team, and apply pressure on the QB. He seems to do everything well, stays low, stays on his feet, can collapse the pocket, and is known for batting down passes. A very nimble footed, athletic, and powerful DL who has played both DE and DT as a sophomore.

Future All-American
Kelly Harpham 6-2, 260, 4.9 Lakewood
Here is a DT for you to keep your eye on over the next two years.
On Film–He certainly shows the agility needed to play the DT position but he is also very effective as an OG. On defense he can get into gaps and disrupt the offensive flow, and on offense he can pull and trap like a seasoned veteran. He could weigh close to 300 pounds once he gets to college.
Grades–His GPA is 2.5. Benches 285.
Favorite Schools–USC, UCLA, NE, CAL, STANFORD, OR, AZ, NOTRE DAME, and SAN DIEGO STATE.

Outside Linebackers
••••• Anthony Barr 6-4, 218, 4.5 Los Angeles Loyola
The #1 prospect in California and one of the nation's overall top 10.
On Film–#2 can do it all. He may just be the best big back in the country on offense and when he does play defense, he is a difference maker at the OLB or SS position. He is an outstanding athlete who is explosive out of his stance and he sometimes looks like he is being shot out of a cannon as he approaches the QB. He spends more time on offense but if he were to play DE or OLB on every down we would be talking about, perhaps, the nation's #1 defensive player. When coming off the ball he can bend to the extent where it sometimes looks like he is parallel to the ground, has terrific closing speed, and looks thin at 218 pounds. We had his game highlights a couple times on my CBS Max Preps Report show this past fall and he impresses you with his straight up and down style, burst, vision, balance, and strength. His quickness to the hole on offense and his quickness off the edge on defense is the key to his game. A high school difference maker with terrific instincts, he should be an immediate impact player once he gets to college but I just don't know at what position.
Stats–Rushed for 1,890 yds and 20 TDs on his way to earning All-City honors and fumbled just once all year.
Other Sports–Has been timed in a 11.1 100 and a 22.4 200 meters in track.
Grades–His GPA is 3.3. Benches 275 and has a remarkable 38" VJ.
Favorite Schools–His father, Tony Brooks, and his uncle Reggie Brooks, played ball at Notre Dame. Right now he is looking at NOTRE DAME, USC, STANFORD, TN, FSU, CO, UCLA, MI, and CAL.
••••+ Tony Jefferson 6-0, 197, 4.62 Chula Vista Eastlake
One of the more productive two-way players in the country.
On Film–You got to be impressed with Tony's ability to get to the ball on defense. He played OLB most of last season showing great speed and quickness off the edge. I was impressed with his ability to play off blocks, stay on his feet, and get to the ball. He dominated at the point of attack and on film it didn't look like he had been neutralized all season. He is a player who loves contact and, at the high school level, he's a dominating player and a difference maker. On offense he showed the burst, body control, and quickness to cause damage outside. A smart back who shows a good feel to pick and slide, he shows the vision, burst, and cut back ability to run through traffic. A dominating high school ball player who has the size to become and outstanding SS in college.
Stats–He recorded 88 tackles, 4 sacks, 12 tackles for losses at OLB and picked off 2 passes at LB. He rushed for 1,358 yds and 28 TDs at RB on his way to earning 1st Team All-State honors and Offensive Player of the Year honors.
Grades–His GPA is 3.0 and he scored a 1320 on the SAT.
Favorite Schools–Right now USC, UCLA, GA, FL, NOTRE DAME, STANFORD, PENN STATE, TN, and OK appear to have his attention.
••••+ Cecil Whiteside 6-3, 223, 4.6 Newport Beach Newport Harbor
He is called a tackling machine by his coach.
On Film–He certainly looks the part, he's the consummate high school athlete and this guy was born to make tackles. He flies to the ball, is a physical ball player who can dominate the point of attack, and is quick, tough, and aggressive with a relentless style of play. He can dominate a ball game when he is on and he is on most of the time. Cecil is exceptional when in pursuit and a sure tackler who could break down in space and make plays.
Stats–He recorded 98 tackles, 6 sacks, and 28 tackles for losses from his OLB position. He also played slot receiver on offense.
Other Sports–He has thrown the shot put 57' 11" and the discus 187' 5" in track.

••• Soma Vainuku 6-1, 245, 4.6 Eureka
I'm kicking myself because I drove right past Eureka without stopping this past March, and Soma's name came up to me a little bit later.

I went to Edison to catch up on Willie Flowers and came away also impressed with Mr. Yates.
On Film–He is extremely physical and quick. Super strong, he doesn't seem to have many problems with high school blockers. He is an aggressive and quick-to-the-ball type of backer who shows the ability to shed blocks quickly and find the ball. All he does is attack and stays low when doing it. He can also change directions quickly. A powerhouse with very good feet.
Stats–He recorded over 80 tackles, 13 caused tackles, and 5 fumble recoveries in '08.
Other Sports–He was 42 and 6 and finished 6th in state in wrestling.
Grades–His GPA is 3.0. Benches 405 and has a 30" VJ.
Favorite Schools–UCLA, OR, WA, CAL, FRESNO ST, and WSU.
••• Marc Millan 6-0, 202, 4.6 Mission Viejo
When I called head coach Bob Johnson to check out a couple of other players, he immediately recommended Mr. Millan.
On Film–#23 is a small but explosive back with enormous strength and attitude. He has been an excellent pass rusher for the past two years for Mission Viejo, comes off the edge with strength, uses his quick hands to disengage, and shows an excellent closing burst. In the Loyola game he had 3 sacks, 10 tackles, and 7 QB hurries.
Stats–He totaled 100 tackles, 13 sacks, and 3 caused fumbles last year.

Favorite Schools–UT, OR, BOISE STATE, ASU, and SAN DIEGO STATE.
••• Caleb Justice 5-10, 205, 4.7 Fresno Bullard
I know what you are thinking, he is a little undersized for the OLB position but believe me, on film this guy is a Tasmanian devil.
On Film–He is relentless with an aggressive style of play. As versatile as they come, last season he played four defensive positions and he might be better suited to play SS but he sure did look good at OLB.
Stats–He recorded 75 stops, 4 sacks, 3 picks, and 15 tackles for losses in '08. Also carried the ball 62 times for 250 yds and 6 TDs and catching 15 passes for 150 yds and 3 TDs at RB.

Inside Linebackers
••••+ Hayes Pullard 6-2, 220, 4.5 Los Angeles Crenshaw
We had Hayes listed as a future All-American in our '08 magazine and this season he is a current All-American.
On Film–He is strong, fast, flexible, productive, and aggressive. He could wind up playing either OLB or ILB but with his ability to make plays from sideline to sideline and break down in space and make tackles, I believe he could become a dominating ILB in college. He does a great job of playing off blocks and getting to the ball. He makes all his team's checks and calls and is a leader on the field. He dominated from the first game he played in '07 until the last game in '08. Shows remarkable lateral speed, gets to the perimeter in a hurry, stays low, and explodes into ball carriers. He is the consummate LB.

Still another ILB with terrific sideline to sideline speed.
On Film–#15 is a backer who will not stay blocked. He can easily redirect, shows excellent closing speed, runs well laterally, stays low, and explodes into ball carriers. A very athletic backer who can break down in space and make plays. In fact, he made a whole lot of them during the '08 season. The main reason I gave him four stars is his game against Crenshaw in which he completely took over with 4 sacks and 22 tackles.

He shows some scrambling ability but is better suited for a pro-style offense. Very comfortable in the pocket, he can sense the heat and knows when to hold the ball and when to get rid of it.

The son of hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, he's on the verge of making a major name for himself in a completely different sport.

On Film–A big, sturdy receiver, he's very active and seems to catch everything within reach, and even some passes that appear not to be within reach. He has great lower body strength to break tackles and gain significant yardage after the reception. He shows nice juke moves, is a good downfield blocker, and does whatever it takes to help his team. In the Compton game he had 4 catches for 156 yds and 2 TDs, and in the Grant game he had 4 catches for 93 yds and 1 score.
Stats–Caught 17 passes for 506 yds and 6 TDs. He also played some CB.

•••+ Austin Hill 6-3, 190, 4.5 Corona Roosevelt

Favorite Schools–UCLA, WSU, BOISE STATE, FRESNO STATE, and CAL.
Other Sports–He's been timed in an 11.3 100 meters and long jumped 22' in track. In basketball he is a sharp-shooting PG who averages 21 pts and 11 rebounds a game.

Other Sports–He's been timed in an 11 flat 100 and a 23 flat 200 meters in track. Averages 12 pts and 3 rebounds a game as a PG in basketball.
Grades–His GPA is 3.0. Benches 275.
Stats–Caught 17 passes for over 300 yds and 7 TDs as a sophomore.

Other Tight Ends to Watch:
Marcus Howard 6-2, 240, 4.7 Inglewood
Other Sports–He has thrown the shot put 52' and the discus 147' in track
Grades–His GPA is 2.8 and he scored a 25 on the ACT. Benches 300.

Other Tackles to Watch:
Ed Nevarez 6-5, 330, 5.5 Compton
Alex Serrano 6-5, 260, 5.1 Los Angeles Dorsey
Eric Alt 6-6, 300, 5.3 Ontario Colony
Derek Stickney 6-7, 285, 5.2 Placentia El Dorado
Stats–He started every game since his sophomore year. He is a two-time All-Conference LT.
Grades–His GPA is 3.0. Benches 315 and has a 33" VJ.

•••+ Michael Criste 6-5, 294, 5.4 Mission Viejo
Coach Bob Johnson raves about this young man's potential as either an OT or OG.
On Film–He plays both positions and plays them well. Quick for his size, he plays with good leverage and balance, and is rarely on the ground. He improved by leaps and bounds his junior year and big things are expected of him this season. Very disciplined, he shows pretty quick feet for an OL and he can quickly redirect.
Other Sports–Has thrown the shot put 45' and the discus 145' in track.
Grades–His GPA is 3.0. Benches 355 and has a 21" VJ.
Favorite Schools–UCLA, USC, STANFORD, and WA.
Favorite Schools–UCLA, AZ, UNLV, OR, WA, CO STATE, and SAN DIEGO STATE.
•••+ Roman Sapolu 6-2, 255, 4.9 Huntington Beach Edison
He is the son of former 49'er all-pro Jesse Sapolu.
On Film–Roman has his dad's natural ability at both the OC and DE positions. On offense, he is exceptionally strong at the point of attack, pulls and traps very well, and plays big in big games. He does a good job of staying with his blocks and is capable of blocking out on the second level. Shows big-time balance and technique and is able to play both OG and OC.
Stats–He earned All-League honors for his play at OC.
Favorite Schools–Committed to OREGON STATE.
••• Demetrius Beaver 6-4, 280, 5.0 Westchester High
A big, naturally strong, and very athletic OL who could play tackle or guard at the next level.
On Film–He impresses you right off the bat with his overall athletic ability. He is quick with good balance, long arms, and body control, loves to mix it up, and stays with his blocks until the whistle. He shows the kind of mobility major schools are looking for at the guard position. Already shows outstanding footwork and technique that is needed at the next level. He also played some tackle on defense.
Stats–Totaled 20 tackles and 3 sacks on defense and earned All-League honors for his play on tackle on offense.
Other Sports–Has been timed in a 14.4 100 meters and has thrown the shot put 38' in track.
Grades–His GPA is 3.0.
Favorite Schools–USC, UCLA, UNLV, CAL, ASU, and OR.
••• Chandler Hubbard 6-4, 265, 5.2 Salinas
A 265 pounder with outstanding athletic ability.
On Film–Chandler is a big guy who can move his feet, does a good job of extending his arms, and keeping pass rushers away from the pocket. A natural knee bender who takes good angles to his blocks and is almost always in good position. He is a very impressive high school RT who could wind up playing OG in college. He is a good reason why Salinas won their first playoff game in four years last fall.
Stats–Earned All-League and All-Area Honors for his play at RT.
Other Sports–He averages 8 pts and 10 rebounds a game as an FW in basketball.
Grades–His GPA is 3.6. Benches 290.

Ryan Edwards 6-4, 285, 5.1 Long Beach Polly
Colin Tanigana 6-3, 280, 5.0 Los Angeles-Loyola
Defensive Lineman

A very athletic backer who can break down in space and make plays. In fact, he made a whole lot of them during the '08 season. The main reason I gave him four stars is his game against Crenshaw in which he completely took over with 4 sacks and 22 tackles.

The state's top rated CB prospect.

He breaks quickly on passes and shows the athleticism to reach around the receiver and break up the pass without causing a penalty. He reads and reacts as well as any DB in the state.
