Scouting the Western United States

The Rest of the West

Quarterbacks
••••• Jake Heaps 6-2, 195, 4.7 Sammamish Skyline, WA
If you go by accomplishments, production and the ability to make things happen then you would have to rank Jake as the #1 QB prospect in the country. As it is, I have him ranked among the top ten overall players and it is well deserved.
On Film–He is a playmaker and a field general with a very strong arm. He's as accurate as any QB in the country, shows excellent footwork, and the ability to lead his team. In fact, over the past two years he has led his team to two state titles. It's my belief that if he makes the right choice and picks a school that will work with his talents, then within three or four years he will be a Heisman candidate. The key to his game is poise. This guy has ice-water in his veins, the ferocious pass rush does not phase him, he goes through progressions easily, reads defenses well, and can hit his receivers on the numbers just about every time. Another key is he can throw the deep out with authority. He has a nice follow through, sets up quickly for the pass, shows very good awareness in the pocket, and does a good job of avoiding the rush. A prep superstar with All-American written all over him.
Stats–He completed 202 of 312 passes for 2,945 yds and 38 TDs and was picked off just 4 times. He also ran for 7 TDs. We had him as a future All-American last season after he threw for 3,103 yds and 31 TDs for the Spartans.
Grades–His GPA is 3.0. Benches 235.
Favorite Schools–Committed to BYU.

•••+ Dallas Lloyd 6-2½, 202, 4.6 Pleasant Grove, UT
I must admit I didn't know much about Dallas until I had seen his junior film.
On Film–He shows excellent agility, speed, a quick release, a strong arm, and he is a competitor from the word go. Known for his ability to lead his team, he's a very vocal QB with the arm strength and poise the scouts are looking for. He can also make one heck of an FS on defense.
Stats–Earned All-League honors for his play at both QB and FS.
Other Sports–Averages 10 pts and 4 rebounds a game as a guard in basketball.
Grades–His GPA is a perfect 4.0 and he scored a 24 on the ACT.
Favorite Schools–Committed to STANFORD.

Not as well known as some of the state's other top prospects but once we got a hold of Tannon's film, I came away very impressed.
On Film–This guy's got a feel for the game, he's very accurate, and a take charge type of QB with a quick release and nice footwork. He knows how to get the job done and for proof just watch the Spanish Fork game in which he almost single handedly led Lone Peak into the playoffs.

One of the top two prospects in the state.
On Film–#25 is a slasher with terrific vision, great speed, cutting ability, balance, and surprising strength. He shows the kind of home run speed that the college scouts love to see. Not a workhorse type of a back at 180 pounds but he has amazing quickness and the ability to cause damage every time he handles the ball. A smart back who shows a good feel to pick and slide, terrific cutback ability, and once he's out in the open field, it's all over. The #1 athlete in the state of Montana.

Future All-American
Kasen Williams 6-2, 195, 4.6 Sammamish Skyline, WA
The state of Washington's #1 prospect for the class of 2011.

Not a blazer but a go-to guy who can accelerate to full speed in the blink of an eye, and he always seems to get good positioning to cut off and shield defenders from the ball. Tight Ends
••••• Curtis White 6-5, 250, 4.63 Eugene Sheldon, OR
The #1 prospect in the state of Oregon and one of the country's top five tight ends.
On Film–#16 is athletic, big, tough, and hard working. He has very good speed for a 250 pounder, in fact, he surprises defenders with that speed and quickness. He does a good job of sustaining his blocks and comes off the ball with speed and strength. A physical player, he attacks the ball as a receiver. In person he already looks like a major college TE and the fact is, he also has All-American ability at DE. Regardless of which position he plays, you can bet Curtis will make an impact. I was impressed with his ability to get off the line, find the open seam, catch the ball with his hands, and quickly turn up field. The consummate TE, he can catch and block with the very best.
Stats–Caught 61 passes for 709 yds and 8 TDs on his way to earning All-State honors. He also totaled 70 tackles and 9 sacks to go with 21 tackles for losses at DE. As a sophomore he caught 31 passes for 450 yds. There is a chance he may play LB this year to take advantage of his range and speed to the ball.
Other Sports–As a sophomore he averaged 12 pts and 13 rebounds a game as an FW in basketball, surgery kept him from playing last season.
Grades–His GPA is 2.7 and he scored a 1590 on the SAT. Benches 250.
Favorite Schools–He committed early to OREGON but that has not kept LSU, USC, CAL, UCLA, and NOTRE DAME from continuing to recruit him. His cousin, Gaston Green, was an All-American at UCLA.

••••+ Xavier Grimble 6-6, 245, 4.7 Las Vegas Bishop Gorman, NV
Very close to being a five-star player, he just needs to catch more passes for that to happen.
On Film–He runs precise routes, shows soft hands, and is one of the more athletic TE prospects in the nation. Gorman splits him out at times where he plays sort of a highbred WR/TE. I am impressed with his overall athletic ability, his quickness, and strong hands. In person he already looks like a major college TE. He has the body of a basketball PFW (which he is), he possesses all the tools for future stardom, and also to be an impact player at the college level. He is not yet an impact player in high school but has that kind of ability. In fact, there may not be a better TE in the country when it comes to yards after the catch. His sophomore year he helped lead Bishop Gorman to the state championship game.
Stats–Caught 13 passes for over 300 yds and 4 TDs playing on a run oriented team. He sure made the most of it averaging close to 25 yds per catch.
Other Sports–In basketball he averages 10 pts and 8 rebounds a game as a PFW.
Grades–His GPA is close to a 2.5. Benches 285 and has an impressive 34" VJ.
Favorite Schools–Committed to USC.

•••• Sefa Tanoai 6=4, 260, 4.8 Pleasant Grove, UT
He may be the best TE you've never heard of.
On Film–#45 is a standout blocker who is better than some of the tackles receiving Division I offers this year. This guy goes at it showing quick hands, good arm extension, and he will stay with his blocks until the whistle. He shows the ability to win blocking battles at a consistent rate and has the quickness, body control, and burst to dominate at the next level. As far as receiving is concerned, this guy catches everything within reach. Not a speed demon, but he shows pretty good initial quickness, he can separate from a defender, catch the ball, and he's a load to bring down. He dominated the Lone Peak game as a receiver and blocker.
Stats–He caught 28 passes for 384 yds and 6 TDs averaging over 15 yds per catch.
Other Sports–He averages 16 pts and 7 rebounds a game as a PFW in basketball.

•••+ Jake Rodgers 6-6, 245, 4.8 Spokane Shadel Park, WA
It has been my belief that the ball players from Spokane do not get the kind of recognition they deserve from me and other analysts.
On Film–Jake proves that he certainly can play with just about any TE west of the Mississippi. He is a good sized athletic receiver who is also known for his blocking skills, gets off the line and into his routes quickly, and shows the hands, body control, and athletic ability to adjust to poorly thrown passes. Deceptively strong, he is strong enough to play TE at the next level.
Stats–He earned All-City and All-State mention for his play at TE.
Favorite Schools–Committed to WASHINGTON STATE.

•••+ Aaron Dunn 6-6, 230, 4.8 Spokane Shadle Park, WA
A truly gifted all around athlete who stars in football and basketball.
On Film–He is not yet a difference maker type of a player but certainly has that kind of athletic ability to become one. He has improved by leaps and bounds over the past two years in his blocking ability and in his receiving. He shows strong hands, quick feet, does a good job of sustaining his blocks, and comes off the ball with power and purpose. When given a chance to catch the ball he shows soft hands and the ability to turn up field quickly for extra yardage. A diamond in the rough with the sky is the limit type of potential.
Stats–Earned All-City and All-Western Washington honors in both football and basketball last season.
Grades–His GPA is a perfect 4.0.
Favorite Schools–Committed to WASHINGTON STATE.

•••+ Bryan Sampson 6-4, 210, 4.7 Pleasant Grove, UT
It's not often when you find two top-notch TE's on the same high school team but that's what we are getting here with Bryan. When pleasant Grove need a two tight end set they called on King Kong to play on the other side. He also played a good part of the season at OLB but he's better suited to play TE in college.
On Film–He proves to be an outstanding blocker with a long wingspan, he's quick off the ball, runs good routes, and shows a good pair of hands.
Stats–He didn't catch a whole lot of passes but did catch the game winning touchdown in the regional championship.
Other Sports–Averages 13 pts and 14 rebounds a game as an FW in basketball.
Grades–His GPA is 3.3. Benches 225 and has a 32" VJ.
Favorite Schools–Committed to BYU.

•••+ Jake Rodgers 6-6, 245, 4.8 Spokane Shadle Park, WA
He hasn't gotten a whole lot of national press but is well known in eastern Washington.
On Film–Jake catches everything within sight and impresses you with his deceptive speed. He gets off the line and into his routes quickly, and shows the hands, body control, and athletic ability to adjust to poorly thrown balls. He is deceptively strong and strong enough to play TE at the next level.
Favorite Schools–Committed to WSU.

•••+ Mike Hartvigson 6-6, 230, 4.8 Bothell,WA
A bit of a surprise to me and just about everyone else scouting the Pacific Northwest. I missed Mike during my trip to the Seattle area in March but received information on him a couple of months later. He's a tall, active, and very athletic TE who is just now starting to come into his own. The scouts love his potential, athletic ability, and attitude. Needs to hit the weights but already shows strong hands and quick feet.
Grades–His GPA is over a 3.0. Benches 250.
Favorite Schools–Committed to WASHINGTON.

Future All-American
Austin Seferian-Jenkins 6-7, 240, 4.8 Gig Harbor, WA
At this very early stage I have not seen a better junior TE in the country.
On Film–Austin is very impressive in person, he looks like a major college PFW and on film he's even more impressive. He's a physical TE with great hands, very good speed, jumping ability, and he's already proven to be an excellent blocker. He's the total package at the TE position and really impresses me with his yards after catch. He comes off the ball with power and speed, catches the ball away from his body, turns up field quickly, and it normally takes more than one defender to bring him down. He should rank among the nation's top 50 players next season.
Stats–He caught 19 passes for 409 yds and 3 TDs averaging 21 yds per catch.
Other Sports–Averages 19 pts and 8 rebounds a game as a PFW in basketball.
Grades–His GPA is 3.6. Benches 260.

•••• Nick Rowland 6-5, 295, 5.1 Peoria Centennial, AZ
You've got to just love a 295 pounder who plays guard and can pull and trap the way Mr. Rowland does.
On Film–He's a really aggressive guard with flawless technique. He excels in pass protection, can slide and mirror with the best of them, and dominated from start to finish in the '08 season. He has the frame to weigh around 320 in college. Super strong at the point of attack, he's a player who loves to play the game and has helped lead Centennial for the past three years.

This past spring the scouts were enamored with Mr. Gibson's size, quick feet, and potential.
On Film–He has already proven to be an excellent pass protector, aggressive at the point of attack with good speed off the ball, and he's technically sound. A big guy who can move his feet and who's going to be heavily recruited and that's exactly what's happening with Mr. Gibson.
Stats–He has only allowed 1 sack in his high school career. He graded out at 90% in his blocking assignments. A dominating tackle who could also play guard in college. Earned All-State mention for his play on offense.

He's built more like a TE than an LT.
On Film–#62 takes it to defenders and dominates in almost every confrontation. He looks very thin at 247 and has the frame to weigh close to 300 pounds. On his film he shows the ability to win battles at a consistent rate and has the quickness, body control, and burst to get to linebackers before they even know what hit them. A smart, technically sound player with unlimited potential. He shows good, natural power.
Stats–Earned All-State mention and helped lead Alta to two straight state championships.
Other Sports–Averages 5 pts and 5 rebounds a game as a center in basketball.
Favorite Schools–Committed to BYU.

•••+ Ben Riva 6-7, 285, 5.0 Seattle O'Dea, WA
His coach calls him the best OL in the state.
On Film–I call him a potential All-American. He is versatile and athletic with an aggressive style of play. This guy excels at both the OT and DT positions. I was impressed with his ability to get out onto the second level and effectively block down on linebackers, and for a big guy, that's no easy task. He's been blessed with long arms, quick hands, and a competitive nature. He shows the ability to win battles at a consistent rate and can dominate at the point of attack. With good natural power, he always seems to get good positioning and never lets up. He looks rather thin at 285 and could carry 320 pounds in college. His film shows him dominating in the Lakeside and Ranier Beach games and big things are expected of Ben this season.

•••+ Colin Porter 6-5, 305, 5.1 Redmond, WA
Here's a ball player who earned All-Combine honors down in San Antonio in January. He plays mostly tackle in high school but could wind up playing guard in college.
On Film–Very strong in the upper body, he shows good quickness off the ball, dominates the point of attack, and also pancakes most defenders he locks up on. What I like most about Colin is his quick feet and attitude. He plays the game with a mean streak and is a leader both on and off the field. Just what the doctor ordered for any big-time offense line. He can bend his knees and gets good leverage.
Stats–Earned All-League honors at tackle. He did not allow a sack in '08 and averaged 8 pancake blocks a game.
Grades–His GPA is 3.1. Benches 320 and has a 20" VJ.

If you are a college coach looking for a 6-7, 285 pounder with great work habits and a desire to improve his game, look no further than Pails (nickname).
On Film–I was impressed with his stick-to-itiveness, he can extend his arms, shows quick hands, and does a great job of staying with his defender until the whistle. He does a good job of sustaining his blocks, shows very good lateral movement, makes contact with the defensive lineman quickly coming out of his stance, and can reach linebackers in the blink of an eye. He shows very good footwork and easily slides outside to cut off pass rushers and seems to do everything effortlessly. Fast becoming one of the most recruited offensive linemen in the west.

Favorite Schools–ASU, NE, CO, STANFORD, UCLA, WA, and UTAH.

•••+ Tuni Kanuch 6-2, 295, 5.0 South Jordan Bingham, UT
During one of my drives through the Salt Lake City area this past spring, Tuni's name was one that came up on a consistent basis.
On Film–He's a very athletic 295 pounder. Not real tall but still gets good leverage and has the frame to weigh close to 320. Quick enough to get out in space and run the field, he always seems to get good positioning and once he locks onto a defender it's all over. Has dominated over the past two years. Perfectly suited to play either OG or OC in college.
Grades–His GPA is over a 2.0. Benches 385.
Favorite Schools–Committed to BYU.

He may not be the tallest OL around but after you watch this young man on film, you will understand why everyone is so high on him.
On Film–He's a very solid run blocker and he does a great job of finishing his blocks. Blessed with quick feet, he can read defenses and make changes at the line. On Film–Athletic for a 280 pounder, he's quick as a cat, can get to the second level fast, and he shows good technique as both a pass and run blocker. He also shows the footwork and hand speed the college scouts are looking for in an OG. He can play tackle or guard, but is better suited to play guard in college. Very determined with a great attitude. He was the only sophomore starter on the state championship team in '07. He dominated in that game against O'Dea.

In fact, John prefers to play DT and has All-American potential on either side of the ball. I was really impressed with his quickness, desire, and closing speed. On offense he shows a lot of punch when coming out of his stance, does a good job of holding his ground, and rarely gets beat to the punch. He can slide and mirror and shows enough quickness to effectively block out on the second level. Believe me this young man is a big-time player with All-American written all over him.

He does a very good job of playing off blocks, he rarely spends time on the ground, and his quickness and timing allows him to disrupt the offense more than once.

A physical and aggressive ball player, he shows good backside pursuit and at all times he is moving towards the ball. He can dominate the high school level with his strength and should be able to do the same in college. One of the better DT prospects west of the Mississippi, he also plays tackle on offense. A relentless playmaker.

Not super tall but he uses his hands and strength to gain the advantage of the blocker. He gets into gaps and disrupts the offensive flow dominating with his strength and quickness. •••+ Maxx Forde 6-4, 240, 4.75 Woodenville High, WA
For some strange reason Maxx has not gotten the attention he deserves. He should be more heavily recruited than he is based on his film.
On Film–His ability to diagnose plays quickly and get in pursuit should make him a heavily recruited Division I player. He uses his hands well, gets off blocks quickly, and can run down ball carriers from behind. For proof just check out the Roosevelt game in which Maxx dominated against the run. He has the frame to weigh 280 in college. Plays DT in high school and he should remain at that position once he gains weight and strength. Not yet a dominating player but he certainly can become one when he ambitiously hits the weight room.

On Film–Ken impresses you at the QB, WR, and FS positions. In fact, some college scouts believe he has what it takes to play CB at the next level. A very productive FS to say the least and he may be the most productive DB in the entire west. He plays a physical game, he's very fluid, can turn his hips, makes up ground quickly and shows a smooth backpedal. To say he has a nose for the ball is an understatement, he seems to make more catches then the receivers do.
