Virgina and West Virginia's Top Football Prospects

Virginia and West Virginia

Quarterbacks
••••• Phillip Sims 6-2, 215, 4.7 Chesapeake Oscar Smith
You would have a good argument if you ranked Phillip as the #1 QB prospect in the country. As it is, I have him ranked 18th overall but believe me, this young man can do it all. He has pure athletic ability and he has what it takes to become an impact player at the next level.
On Film–He's a good decision maker. A drop-back passer with a very strong arm, he throws the deep out with authority. He also does a great job of buying time allowing his receivers to get open and the defense always needs someone to shadow Phillip in case he decides to run with the ball. However, he has proven to be a pocket passer with ice water in his veins. Nothing seems to fluster him, he stands strong in the face of a heavy rush, and can normally put the ball on the money just about every time. He is one of the more impressive offensive players in the nation and it sure does look like Coach Saban finally has that great QB prospect he has been looking for. He is a star who plays big in big games. In the state championship game against Osbourne he was 17 at 22 and threw of 344 yds and 6 TDs.
Stats–He threw for 3,167 yds and 38 TDs and, believe it or not, was picked off just 4 times in '08 on his way to earning Tidewater Player of the Year honors ahead of such senior notables Tajh Boyd and Kevin Newsome.
Other Sports–He averages 12 pts and 14 rebounds a game as an FW in basketball.
Grades–His GPA is 2.7. Benches 260.
Favorite Schools–Committed to ALABAMA.

•••+ William (Bo) Revell 6-6, 224, 4.9 Haymarket Battlefield
He is the #1 prospect in Northern Virginia.
On Film–This guy appears to have it all, size, arm strength, and coolness under pressure. He steps up in the pocket and delivers a nice catchable ball. He shows very good vision and is extremely accurate. He knows when to hold the ball, when to get rid of it, and does a real good job of hitting receivers right on the numbers. A big target for pass rushers, Bo may not be the fastest player around but he does a real good job of avoiding the initial rush. He appears to have a bright future. Not yet the great QB he can become, but if he chooses the right school I believe Bo has the potential to become a difference maker.
Stats–He threw over 1,300 yds and 11 TDs and also ran for 4 other scores.
Other Sports–He averages 6 pts and 10 rebounds a game as a center in basketball.
Grades–His GPA is 3.9.
Favorite Schools–DUKE, MD, VA, GA, NC, and AL.

••• Michael Rocco 6-3, 195, 4.7 Lynchburg Liberty Christian
It looks like a good year for signal callers in the state of Virginia.
On Film–Michael seems to have a great understanding and grasp of the game, and that shows in practice and game situations. He also has impressed everyone with his arm strength, poise, and his ability to throw the deep out with authority.
Stats–He completed 113 of 171 passes for 2,066 yds and 24 TDs. He completed 66% of his passes and was picked off 7 times.
Favorite Schools–LOUISVILLE, VA TECH, WAKE FOREST, and VA.

••• Connor Reilly 6-4, 180, 4.7 Fairfax W.T. Woodson
A transfer from Tennessee, he picked up where he left off in the Volunteer State and put together one heck of a junior campaign.
On Film–Connor shows the height, arm, leadership skills, and overall athletic ability to make the move to Division I ball.
Stats–He completed 121 of 211 passes for 1,947 yds and 24 TDS completing 57% of his passes and was picked off 6 times.
Favorite Schools–VA, SC, VA TECH, MD, and UCONN.

••• Jake McGee 6-5, 210, 4.6 Richmond Collegiate School
Here is a tall guy with a big arm.
On Film–He is a student of the game who improved by leaps and bounds his junior campaign. Strictly a pocket passer, he shows all the physical tools and will excel at the next level.
Stats–He threw for 2,200 yds and 30 TDs in '08.
Other Sports–He is a standout FW in basketball.

••• Frank Buckley 6-4, 185, 4.7 Woodbridge
He is certainly someone to keep an eye on.
On Film–He has the height the scouts are looking for. He shows a plus arm, shows good instincts around the pocket, and excellent production.
Stats–He completed 106 of 184 passes for 1,612 yds and 16 TDs completing 58% of his passes and was picked off 4 times.

••• Logan Moore 6-1, 180, 4.6 Fairmont Senior, WV
He is the #1 QB prospect in West Virginia.
On Film–He shows a great arm, a good head for football, coolness under pressure, the ability to move around the pocket to buy time, and has been an exceptionally accurate passer over the past two years.
Stats–He threw for over 1,800 yds and 20 TDs on his way to earning 2nd Team All State honors.

Running Backs
•••+ T.J. Peeler 6-1, 200, 4.6 Ashburn Broad Run
Not as well known as his teammate Adrian Flemming but just as talented.
On Film–T.J. is an explosive back with good strength, vision, and balance. He's really tough to knock off his feet and does an excellent job of finishing off his runs. He is a back who knows how to find the holes, also blessed with workable speed, and a great desire.
Stats–Earned some All-League mention for his play at RB.
Grades–His GPA is 3.0. Benches 300.
Favorite Schools–Committed to PITT.

•••+ DeJor Simmons 5-8, 170, 4.4 Virginia Beach Green Run
Small but explosive, he's light but very strong.
On Film–DeJor proves that he could fit in nicely to a spread offense, he's great out in the open field, has a good pair of hands, and is surprisingly strong when running between the tackles. An elusive, tough, and very quick back, he has all the way kind of speed.
Stats–Earned some All-Tidewater area honors in '08. He could play RB, WR, or CB at the next level.
Grades–His GPA is 3.0.
Favorite Schools–WV, DUKE, TN, KY, EAST CAROLINA, and UCONN.

••• Trey Johnson 5-10, 175, 4.5 Richmond Varina
Small but explosive, he's surprisingly strong for a 175 pounder.
On Film–He is quick as light and is he is strong in the legs. He may lack great size but his vision and balance more than makes up for it. He certainly has all the tools to make it at the next level. He saw limited action at CB where he showed good anticipation, timing, body control, and a very smooth backpedal. He is better suited to play TB in college.
Stats–He rushed for 1,969 yds and 21 TDs averaging 8.1 yds per carry in '08 on his way to earning All Central Region honors.
Favorite Schools–Committed to WEST VIRGINIA.

••• Desmond Evans 5-10, 190, 4.5 Fairmont Senior, WV
He is a banger with good hands and great work ethic.
On Film–There isn't much Desmond can't do. He can run, catch, and he even blocks. The scouts are enamored with his quickness to the hole and ability to break tackles.
Stats–He earned some All-State mention for his play at RB and is very coachable player with big-time skills.

••• Aaron Clark 5.7, 183, 4.45 Charlottesville St. Anne's Belfield
He is a small, compact, and very strong RB.
On Film–Accelerates quickly, he's allusive with great balance, uses a stiff arm to his advantage, and shows the ability to break tackles. He runs low to the ground and keeps his legs moving at all times. A very difficult tackle for defenders, he gains significant yardage after initial contact.
Stats–He carried the ball 125 times for 1,050 and 8 TDs averaging 8.4 yds per carry and fumbled just once all season. He is a fine all-around back that also caught 19 passes for 267 yds and 3 scores.

Jeff Allen 6-2, 245, 4.65 Morgantown High, WV

Wide Receivers
••••+ Travis Williams 6-2½, 190, 4.38 Norfolk Lake Taylor
I first caught a glimpse of Travis down in San Antonio watching him perform at both the WR and LB positions and believe me, this young man has All-American potential on either side of the ball.
On Film–Let's go with him as a WR. He is a tall and lanky receiver with good footwork, great hands, and blazing speed. Not only big and fast, but very creative in the open spaces, and one of the best players in the country to just go up and get the ball. He competes hard and can create after the catch. DB's have one heck of a time staying with Travis for more than two seconds. I watched the Maury game in which he had 4 sacks, 10 tackles, and 5 catches. On defense, if he can gain 30 pounds he could make one heck of an OLB. He gets a great bend off of the edge. He gets to full speed in the blink of an eye and can close like no one's business.
Stats–He caught 26 passes for 530 yds and 6 TDs averaging over 21 yds per catch. He also totaled 78 tackles, 13 sacks, and 24 tackles for losses to go with 8 caused fumbles at OLB.

•••• Justin Hunter 6-4, 175, 4.5 Virginia Beach Ocean Lakes
He is a two-sport star.
On Film–He presents great size, large hands, quick feet, and a great attitude to college recruiters. His coach says he will play on Sundays and I am not going to argue with that statement. As flexible as they come, he shows excellent vision, body control, and strength. Explosive is a good way to describe Mr. Hunter. He has the potential to become a long-ball threat and stretches the defense with his speed and moves.
Stats–Earned All-State mention after averaging over 20 yds per catch in '08.
Other Sports–He is a standout FW in basketball that averages close to 20 pts per game.
Grades–His GPA is around 2.5.
Favorite Schools–Committed to LSU.

•••• Anthony Williams 6-4, 195, 4.6 Chesapeake-Atlantic Shores
Here's another 6-4 Williams from the state of Virginia who is also a standout at the WR and LB positions.
On Film–Ant proves to be a real good athlete. His coach says he could grow into a TE but I believe right now you've got to recruit him at the WR position. He is cool as a cat and runs precise routes. He knows how to get open and catches everything within reach. He is also able to change gears when needed. Explosive, competitive, and exceptionally productive at WR, he is a rangy and quick-footed LB on defense. He always runs great routes, knows how to get open, and can run with the ball after the catch.
Stats–Averaged 18 yds per catch as a junior.
Other Sports–He has been timed in a 23 flat 200 meters in track.
Grades–His GPA is 3.3. Benches 225.
Favorite Schools–BC, NC, MD, VA TECH, VA, NC STATE, and CLEMSON.

•••+ Adrian Flemming 6-4, 190, 4.5 Ashburn Broad Run
He is one of the top prospects in northern Virginia.
On Film–Adrian impresses you with his height, leaping ability, deceptive speed, and strong hands. He has a real big frame, could possible grow into a TE, but right now he is a blue chip WR. He possesses all the tools to become a red-zone receiver. He is a competitor with good leaping ability.
Stats–He earned All-League and some All-Northern Virginia Area honors at WR.
Grades–His GPA is over 2.5.
Favorite Schools–MI STATE, DUKE, SYRACUSE, TEMPLE, VA, MARSHALL, and UT.

•••+ Raheem Waiters 6-1, 180, 4.5 Belle Riverside, WV
Hails from the same town as Randy Moss.
On Film–He doesn't have Randy's height or blazing speed but he sure does have his high school production. This guy makes the most of every catch, runs precise routes, always seems to get himself open, and once he makes the catch defenders have one heck of a time bringing him down.
Stats– Last season he caught 16 passes for 387 yds and 4 TDs on his way to earning All-State honors.

••• Josh Brooks 6-5, 200, 4.6 Waynesboro-Fishburne Military, VA
Still another very tall and athletic WR.
On Film–He proves to be an excellent leaper, shows good timing and anticipation, and excels in the red zone. A two-sport athletic, who, once he concentrates on football, look out.
Stats–Caught 14 TDs and 11 TDs in '08.
Other Sports–He is an outstanding FW in basketball.
Grades–His GPA is over 2.5.

Dennis Odom 5-10, 175, 4.5 Richmond Wythe
Sid Brown 6-1, 195, 4.5 Roanoke North Cross
Anthony Grady 6-1, 195, 4.5 Woodbridge Hilton

Tight Ends
•••• Josh Lovell 6-5, 270, 4.9 Christchurch
He is a great-sized TE.
On Film–He shows unusual speed for a 270 pounder. Excellent quickness and strong hands, he is a dominating blocker. He is very difficult to cover because of his height, weight, long arms, and quick feet. A big tiger who can catch the ball away from his body and shows surprising quickness and moves after the catch. He certainly has the strength and quickness to defeat bump and run coverage. He is a strong and competitive ball player and an outstanding run blocker.
Stats–He caught 25 passes for 350 yds and 7 TDs averaging 14 yds per catch. He also totaled 90 tackles, 5 sacks, and 12 tackles for losses at DE.
Grades–His GPA is 2.8 and he scored a 980 on the SAT. Benches 325 and has a 26" VJ.
Favorite Schools–PENN STATE, MD, VA, GA, NC, SC, WV, E. CAROLINA, and VA TECH.

••• Robert Galloway 6-4, 220, 4.7 Winchester Handley
He is definitely someone to keep your eye on.
On Film–He plays TE and LB and plays both positions with big-time skills. He shows great mobility and hands. With added bulk, he could become a dominating TE.
Stats–He earned All-League and All-Area honors for his play at TE.

Offensive Lineman
•••• Caleb Farris 6-4, 300, 5.3 Lexington Rockbridge
He is a powerhouse of a tackle who could wind up playing guard in college.
On Film–Caleb worked exceptionally hard last year to improve his game as a both a run and pass blocker and it certainly shows. His quickness has impressed college scouts as has his ability to win battles at a consistent rate. He has good body control and burst, is quick as a cat, and is very effective in blocking out on the second level. He is a smart and technically sound player who excels as both a run and pass blocker. Dominates the point of attack, he always seems to get great positioning and can pull and trap.
Stats–He earned All-State mention for his play at tackle. He has not allowed a sack in the past two years.
Grades–His GPA is 3.2 and scored a 960 on the SAT. Benches 310.
Favorite Schools–Committed to VIRGINIA TECH.

•••+ Quinton Spain 6-5, 330, 5.3 Petersburg
You immediately take notice of someone his size.
On Film–You also take notice of this young man's quick feet and superior strength. He dominates the point of attack, can redirect, shows good lateral speed, and if he concentrates on just football and becomes more consistent, he certainly shows All-American ability. One of the premier OL prospect in the Atlantic Coast region.
Stats–Earned some All-League mention for his play at OT.
Grades–His GPA is around 2.0. Benches 380.
Favorite Schools–Committed to WEST VIRGINIA.

•••+ Marquis Wallace 6-3, 290, 5.1 Richmond Varina
His coach says he is the best offensive lineman he has ever seen, bar none.
On Film–He is a nasty and tough OT with very strong hands, quick feet, and an aggressive style of play. He also shows the quickness to effectively block out on the second level. He can redirect and he stays with his blocks until the whistle. An enormously talented 290 pounder, he is a very good all-around athlete.
Grades–His GPA is over 2.0.
Favorite Schools–Committed to WEST VIRGINIA.

•••+ Mark Shuman 6-6, 280, 4.99 Ft. Union Military
If you are talking potential then Mark has a ton of it.
On Film–He shows good power, strength, speed, and footwork. He is very quick for a 280 pounder. Not yet a dominating tackle, but as athletic as any lineman in the state. He has the frame to weigh well over 300 pounds. He plays tackle on both sides of the ball but is better suited to be an offensive tackle in college. He is a hard worker with a great frame and he's tenacious in his commitment to excellence. He plays a physical brand of football and does a good job of finishing his blocks.
Grades–His GPA is over 3.0. Benches 240.
Favorite Schools–He will join his brother at VIRGINIA TECH.

•••+ Conner Davis 6-5, 280, 5.1 Glen Allen Deep Run
His coach calls him one to watch, I call him a potential All-American.
On Film–Conner does everything asked of him on both sides of the ball. On offense he's a hard worker with a good frame and a tenacious style of play. He can redirect quickly and shows the speed and body control to effectively block down on linebackers. A very good athlete for a 280 pounder showing excellent footwork and workable strength. On defense he's a run stuffing DT who does a great job of handling the double-team.
Stats–Earned 1st Team All-District honors in '08.
Grades–His GPA is a perfect 4.0. Benches 260.
Favorite Schools–VA, VA TECH, BC, DUKE, MD, SYRACUSE, and WAKE FOREST.

•••+ Mark Arkema 6=3, 290, 5.1 Midlothian
Another one of the fast rising OL prospects in the state of Virginia.
On Film–Mark has been a dominating OL over the past two years. He's exceptionally aggressive, quick, and relentless showing good body control, leverage, and strength. His feet are always moving. He plays a physical brand of football with a mean streak a mile long. Best suited to play either guard or center in college.

Grades–His GPA is 3.9. Benches 325.
Favorite Schools–Committed to VIRGINIA TECH.

••• Russell Bodine 6-3, 279, 5.2 Ft. Union Military Academy
Here's another two-way lineman who will wind up playing OG or OC in college.
On Film–Russell is efficient on both sides on the ball. Very aggressive and super-strong at the point of attack at guard, he's tough as nails with a nasty disposition and is also an excellent long snapper. He plays hard on every down is very competitive and loves to mix it up. He was born to play football.

On Film–He excels as a pass blocker and in zone blocking. He is a tall and athletic 295 pounder with long arms, sets a solid base, and can redirect quickly. He does a good job of keeping his feet moving when pass blocking. I have also seen him play guard on film. He shows the ability to pull and trap and block out on the second level.

On Film–A.J. runs well, proves to be a big guy who can move his feet, is very strong at the point of attack, and he does a good job of extending his arms and keeping pass rushers away from the pocket. A natural knee bender, he takes good angles to his blocks and is almost always in good position.

Holland Anderson 6-5, 240, 4.8 Clifton Centerville

Defensive Linemen
••••• Ego Ferguson 6-4, 260, 4.9 Hargrave Military Academy
J.R. was the #1 prospect in the state of Maryland and for good reason.
On Film–He has dominated the past two years totaling 35 sacks and causing havoc in the opposition's backfield. In person J.R. has been blessed with long arms, long legs, and an athletic build. He is a tough, competitive ball player who does a good job of using his hands to avoid blockers, and can turn the corner in the blink of an eye. Another positive part of his game is his ability to make plays while in pursuit. Every opponent seemed to have a tough time of keeping him out of their backfield. In fact, by the end of the season most offenses designed plays to go the other way. Blessed with natural strength, once he gets to a major college weight program look out. He could wind up playing either DE or DT in college. He just seems to have those natural instincts that allow him to get to the QB.
Stats–Recorded 97 tackles, 13 sacks, and 37 tackles for losses on his way to earning 1st Team All-State honors in '08 after totaling 22 QB sacks as a sophomore. In the St. Stephens game he had 18 tackles and 4 sacks.
Other Sports–Averages 6 pts and 10 rebounds a game as a center in basketball.
Grades–His GPA is 2.8. Benches 315 and has a 28" VJ.
Favorite Schools–FL, MD, PENN STATE, LSU, OK, TN, CLEMSON, NC, NOTRE DAME, SC, GA, USC, UCLA, FSU, and VA TECH.

•••• + Zackary McCray 6-4, 230, 4.7 Lynchburg Brookville
Big #86 is an All-American candidate at both the TE and DE positions.
On Film–I first saw Zak run down in San Antonio and I was impressed with the way this 230 pounder could motor. He shows excellent quickness, is a smart ball player who knows how to get open on offense, and is technically sound as a blocker. However, he really shines on defense. He can bend off the edge, almost until he is split in two, does a great job of using his hands to play off blocks, and shows exceptional speed to the ball. He is blessed with long arms and strong hands. He could get to full speed in a couple of steps, shows a very good up field surge, and routinely beats blockers off the ball. He is also an expert at batting down passes. He is one of the most dominating players in the state of Virginia in '08.
Stats–He caught 10 passes for 158 yds and 2 TDs and totaled 89 tackles, 20 sacks, picked off one pass, batted down 10 others, and also caused 3 fumbles on his way to earning All-State honors.
Grades–His GPA is 3.4. Benches 315 and has a 30" VJ.
Favorite Schools–Committed to VIRGINIA TECH.

••••+ Evan Hailes 6-2, 310, 5.0 Chesapeake Oscar Smith
He is one of the nation's premiere DT prospects.
On Film–#75 is an exceptionally aggressive, intense, and agile 310 pounder. He is explosive and tough. As a rule, he handles the double-team easily and it also seems that the triple-team has little effect on him. He stops everything up the middle, has tremendously quick feet and even quicker hands, great strength, and always seems able to beat his man to the punch. He plays in a very competitive league and dominated it from start to finish. He has the strength to stack the point and hold off the double-team for as long as he wants. He also shows good backside pursuit and at all times he is moving forward towards the ball. He dominates the Tidewater area and for proof just check out the Deep Creek game in which he totaled 8 solo tackles, 4 tackles for losses, and it appeared no one got more than a yard on him up the middle.
Stats–He totaled 81 tackles, 11 sacks, 21 tackles for losses, and batted down 9 passes on his way to earning All-Tidewater Area honors.
Grades–His GPA is around a 3.0.
Favorite Schools–Committed to PENN STATE. He is related to the Denver Broncos Dre'Bly and former Prep Football Report All-American Rico McCoy who is now at Tennessee.

•••• Nicholas Acree 6-5, 291, 5.1 King William
In person he has to be the most impressive-looking kid I've seen this season. In fact, he already looks like a WWE Wrestler.
On Film–He shows very good straight-ahead speed and is an athlete who can overcome the double team with sure strength. Not quite as good running laterally or when redirecting but believe me, no one stops this young man when he draws a bead. He might just be the most powerful defensive player in the country. He plays DE on film but has the body and may be better suited to play DT in college where he can use his good straight-ahead speed and his strength to stack the point. He does not play any offense on the film I watched, however, he does have the size and growth potential to play OT at the next level. A potential All-American at the DT position.
Stats–He totaled 43 tackles, 8 sacks, and 5 tackles for losses in '08.
Grades–His GPA is over 2.0. Benches 430 and has a 24" VJ.
Favorite Schools–Committed to VIRGINIA TECH.

•••+ Derrick Hopkins 6-0, 275, 5.0 Highland Springs
The coaches at Highland Springs are exceptionally high on this young man. They recommended All Americans in the past and believe that Derrick has as much or more potential as any defensive lineman who has ever played at the school.
On Film–He dominates the point of attack, can stack with the best of them, gets good leverage, and shows quick hands and great strength. He keeps his pads low and his legs moving. A superior run stuffer, he shows good initial quickness, can split the double team, and keep a QB honest.
Stats–Earned All-District honors at both NT and OG in '08.
Other Sports–He plays center in basketball.
Grades–His GPA is over 2.5. Squats 525.
Favorite Schools–Committed to VIRGINIA TECH.

•••+ Duke Mosby 6-3, 272, 4.8 Woodberry Forest
He is one of the more reliable DT prospects in the state.
On Film–He proves to be a powerhouse of a DT, he's quick in a limited space, shows the ability to get into gaps, and play off blocks and find the ball. He wears down blockers with his strength and his relentless style of play. He is not yet a dominating ballplayer but he certainly has that kind of ability. He also takes pretty good pursuit angles to the ball.
Stats–He earned some All-League mention for his play at DT.
Favorite Schools–Committed to WAKE FOREST.

••• Zachary Glass 6-3, 230, 4.85 Stuarts Draft
He may not be the biggest, strongest, or fasted DL around, but Zach is certainly one of the more productive ones.
On Film–His motor is always on, he is relentless in pursuit, shows good redirection, excellent closing speed, and the ability to play off blocks and find the ball. Just seems to have natural instincts for either DE or DT. Very athletic for a 230 pounder, he's an expert at stopping the run and applying pressure on the QB.
Stats–He totaled 70 tackles, 12 sacks, 15 tackles for losses, and 5 caused fumbles on his way to earning All-State mention. In 2007 he earned All-Region honors and played only five games.
Grades–His GPA is over 3.0. Benches 250 and has a 27" VJ.
Favorite Schools–PENN STATE, VA, VA TECH, CLEMSON, DUKE, LSU, NC, and WAKE FOREST.

••• Greg Gallop 6-1, 300, 4.99 Chester Thomas Dale
If you are looking for an NT with strength, quick feet, and smarts, look no further than Mr. Gallop.
On Film–This guy dominates the point of attack, stacks up everything coming his way, moves pretty well laterally, but dominates straight ahead. He also shows the ability to get into gaps and play off blocks. He does a good job of finding the ball.
Stats–He earned All-District honors for his play at NT.
Grades–His GPA is a perfect 4.5. Benches 330 and squats 550.

••• Devonte Jackson 6-3, 260, 4.7 Gloucester
A couple of the coaches in his area told me they believed him to be an All-American candidate.
On Film–He shows good, explosive moves off the ball, is blessed with long arms, and an aggressive style of play. He can wear down blockers with his strength and takes pretty good pursuit angles to the ball. He is one of the fastest rising DL prospects in the Atlantic Coast region.
Stats–He earned All-League mention for his play at DE.
Grades–His GPA is over 3.0.

Other Defensive Linemen to Watch:
Deva Goins 6-4, 220, 4.7 Galax
Timmy Johnson 6-3, 235, 4.7 Amhearst County
Greg Daquan Romero 6-2, 215, 4.6 Hampton Phobeus
Ryan Small 6-3, 225, 4.7 Parkersburg South, WV
Keevon Newsome 6-3, 230, 4.7 Portsmouth-Churchland
